mystery cat poop

Question:
one of my cats been pooping outside of the litter box. I found out that one of them pooped in my laundry basket . Any help?
Answer:
Have you changed:
The location of the litter box?
The type of litter?
If not, please take kitty to the vet as soon as possible, and see if there is a medical issue.
Are they still eating and drinking normally?
Have you introduced any other changes into your household lately?
Have you noticed if one kitty is pestering the other while she's trying to use the box? If that's the case, she might go in other places for some peace and quiete.
How many boxes do you have? If you have two cats, you should have about three litter boxes (number of cats + 1 = total # of litter boxes)
Are you scooping waste material as often as possible? Some cats get really fussy about clean litter boxes.
Good luck, please keep us posted.

Answer:
I had to LOL, it's the laundry basket that got me. Those little buggers! I'm having a similar problem. I don't have a handle on it yet. I'll watch your responses as well Good LucK
Answer:
Are either of your cats long haired?
I recently discovered a poop sitting on top of a bag the cats like to sit in, and mildly freaked out - thinking, "oh no. THIS has started". But it turns out that my little one, with long fur, including around her butt, was pooping and it was getting stuck in her fur, and dropping off after she had left the litter box.
I've started trimming the fur around her butt, in an attempt to keep things nice and open back there.

Answer:
Another thing about the laundry basket..I've heard many cats are attracted to it because of its smell, they detect the anmonia used in bleach and most detergents and that reminds them of their litterbox. So they could use it as such. Either a pile of clean laundry or empty laundry basket.
I never had a cat do that, only curled up and gone to sleep on it though.
Stress can make them go anywhere too.

Answer:
Have you recently come back from being away?
Sometimes cats like to get "revenge" for you leaving them. I have heard many stories about them pooping in purses/laundry/night tables/beds/etc. to show they were upset.
Also if the litterbox is not cleaned then they can decide to go elsewhere as a sort of "memo" to you.
Answer:
Haha my two devils sure look like they gave me a revenge all right. All 3 of my rugs got pooped in, and also my bag of socks got peeped at!
No I wasn't away for long, except work. I work 9 to 5 but about 2hours commute each way. Litter box is clean every 2 days.
