Fear of playing. Why is this?

Question:
Well, I hate to break it to you, but there is no "normal cat stuff". That's why there's hundreds, if not thousands, of different cat toys. Every cat likes something different, so you just have to keep trying. And chances are, when you finally find it, she'll get tired of it inside of a week and you'll have to start looking all over. I think you're on the right track, though, using things you have at home instead of running back and forth to the pet store buy more and more toys. Think of things that might look like prey -- mice, birds, and other things that catch cats' attention -- bugs, dust bunnies...that's what she might like to play with.

Answer:
When we first brought Binx home (he was a stray that we saved from the shelter), he had no CLUE about playing with toys. This was puzzling to me because Skeeter loves his toys more than anything. But we had Skeeter since he was 3 months old. We adopted Binx when he was around 6 months old...so I figured that he just hadn't been exposed to toys enough to know that these were "fun things."
Even today, Skeeter is more into his toys than Binx, but Binx loves our feather interactive toys and catnip toys that he can carry around in his mouth like they are his "kill." So, ultimately, you have to let your cat (or 1/2 cat in this case ) tell you what he/she perfers as toys. Try some different things and expose her to them regularly so she isn't scared of them and sees that they are just for fun.
Interactive toys (like the shoelace or feather wand toys) are great because you can simulate predator/prey actions with Angie, have fun, and build your bond with her all at the same time!
Keep trying. She'll eventually learn and tell you what she likes the best.

Unfortunately our little Teija is the exact same way. She is just such a timid cat though. But she never plays, and she is still a little kitten, shes only 6 months old. But we do have her taking Pet Relaxers and she plays with shoelaces now, and she will play with the whole shoe too. The med more or less just relaxes them to the point where they forget about the fears. Thats all.

UPDATE: Angie is playing more with the shoelace. She loves that. I'm still getting her used to other things. She is making progress. Thanks everyone for all of your help.

Aww, I'm so glad. You are being such a great friend to Angie, catlover! See, it just took a little time for her to figure out, "Hey, that's fun!" Congrats on the progress!

Some cats don't really react to toys - our Khamun doesn't show any interest in them at all, but he is an outside cat and wanders around the undergrowth chasing mice etc so I guess a ping pong ball (which I try to get him interested in) is just boring!
At home inside he just strops on the doormat (we didn't train him, he just does it naturally), eats, sleeps and jumps on our knees for petting.
