obsessive affectionate cat

Question:
i have a 4 year old cat bought from a shelter 2 years ago.it always liked affection but as time goes on,esp.the last year,it has become totally unlike any other cat i know or heard of.i grew up on the farm and love cats-yeah,some of us guys actually like cats!anyway, cats always came to me-and i still get comments that owners say they never seen their cat come up to a stranger-which i do believe they know who likes them.my cat has become more like a dog than a cat for personality!it hears my car come up the driveway and will meet me at the door!it seems to know when i get off work.it always walks by me and at the last second (touch)me withe her tail.also, she follows me around the house,to whatever room iam in.whenever i sit on the couch she jumps up and would sit there all day if i let her.she also does this to my wife but she will leave everyones lap if i come home.she even sits on my oldest sons lap which a year ago she was afraid of him!this behavior doesent bother me the slightest but was wondering if anyone else has heard of this or has an idea why she has become this way.she also will sit on my chest, lick my nose and just stare into my eyes for the longest time.am i like a surragate mother?thanks to all for your answers, really like this forum!

hmmmmmmmmmmm, that sounds so sweet if you ask me
The cat I just adopted and took back, long story , was very affectionate like that even in the shelter. He had already sat on my shoulder. When I brought him home, he sat on my lap as I typed on the computer. He slept on "me" when I slept at night...whether he was on my back, my side, or my chest, LOL!! He was by far the most affectionate cat I have ever seen or had. I had to take him back because he was sick, and I'm thinking of re-adopting him, but am wondering if he would forgive me for returning him
My Jazzy, the cat I just put down 2 weeks ago... I had her for 10.5 years. When I would come home, she would be inside the door waiting for me If I had been gone a few days for a weekend trip or something, she would be a the door meowing when I was coming in. I lived with a friend once and he said the minute I pulled into the parking lot, Jasmine would go to the door. She was never a lap cat, but she did follow me around alot and would sleep with me and lay next to me while I watched TV.
I think cats are all different, but your little guy/gal there sounds adorable. Maybe she is just so grateful for the unconditional love you are giving her. Thinking of me and taking Sampson back, this post makes me want to cry... that I just had that and brought him back... but he was sick, and I'm so damn sad about it all
Good luck... your kitty sounds wonderful
I never knew such love of animals until I got Jazzy, and now Sampson... what beautiful creatures we share this planet with

Surrogate mother, dunno, but your kitty loves you! Warmed up to the family, and trusts y'all. Glad you're enjoying the affection; sadly, a couple (forum) people have found the behaviors annoying.
Isn't it surprising when those stereotypical ideas on any particular subject gets dashed? In this case, pleasantly surprising. There are many cats who exhibit what's typically thought of as "dog-like" behavior.
All my cats are extremely friendly, and love to see and smell visitors (after I identify them as such). They always greet me at the front door, they all know their names and always come when called. But my Ginza is very similar to your kitty (her name, please? ). I've written about this often: He follows me around the house 24/7, very clingy, loves his lap cuddles, wraps his paws around me and gazes into my eyes all the time, while drooling! I get pools of wetness all over my shirt and sleeve. He also opens cabinets, flushes the toilet, growls at strangers walking to the door, and fetches. Many other members have cats with similar traits too.
Look forward to hearing more stories, and pics, too!

Answer:
My cats Gyspy and Sasha would watch out the window whenever I left the house, and my neighbors told me that about a 1/2 hour before I was to come home from work they would sit in the window toghether and watch for me. They were always in the window when I returned from work, and as soon as they saw me they would run to the door to greet me. They were both a part of my life for 15+ years and I miss them both every day.
Enjoy the affection you get from your feline companion, for you will miss it someday.

My sweetie girl is the same way, whenever people tell me that cats just want attention when they feel like, I tell them that is not true of all cats. It's a wonderful feeling to bond with your pets (cats) keep on enjoying this gift.
Answer:
A couple of my cats know the route I take to walk to/from work.
Most days butch or screech will be waiting for me in the lane behind our house I walk home on. Vienna always waits for my boyfriend at the railway bridge for him walking home too. Pebbles always sit on the wall waiting for us aswell. Smeagle is just out for herself

I can completely relate to that. My new cat is teh same way. He follows me around no matter where I go, to the mailbox, the laundry, wherever. He also comes in the kids bedrooms and jumps onto their bed to watch me tuck them in at night. He is the same as far as the lap cuddling. He sleeps with me the entire night, and sometimes even tries to sleep on my pillow with me. THe only thing with him is that if you try to ignore him, he will slowly start scratching your hands gently at first, then will start doing it harder, and if you can keep up the ignoring, he will eventually bite your hand, or leg, or arm..... THey sure are sweet that way though
