Loves my hair
Question: I let my kitten sleep with me now and in the middle of the night he loves to play with my hair. This includes scratching at it which winds up scratching my neck, pulling it, and biting it. Now I love my kitten but I do have limits, especially when it comes to my sleep. Any solution besides tossing him out? Answer: Blow air in his face. This won't hurt him but it sure will make him stop in a hurry. Then say NO. Take him in your arms and put him where you want him on the bed (presumably not in your hair) and say GOOD BOY. A few repetitions and he'll get the message. Answer: Yes, you have to get him used to sleeping in his own space now while he's still little, even if it is on your bed with you. I made the mistake of letting Pearl get used to sleeping on the back of my neck when she was little because I thought it was cute. It wasn't so cute when she was full-grown and had turned into a BIG pillow hog! I woke up countless times with a stiff neck from laying down with no pillow because she stretched out on it and pushed me off of it while I was sleeping. Believe me it will be easier to teach your kitten to stop playing with your hair now than it will be to let him do it while he's growing up and try to make him stop once it becomes a bad habit. Answer: I agree with Sky Eyes. Maybe you could put a small cat bed on top of your bed, if there's room. Last summer I let Mellie sleep with me. Every time she did something to disturb me, or slept in a spot that was inconvenient for me, I pushed her off the bed. Since she wanted to be on the bed, she learned pretty fast what was permissible and what wasn't, in order for her to stay on the bed. Answer: You could try putting him down off the bed when he does it, or possible out of your room for a "time out". I've found that the best way to keep a cat from doing something you don't like is with an "You can't be with me if you're going to do that" mentality. They will always choose to be with you instead! (Once they figure it out.) Since my cat is a hard sleeper, I can get comfortable while moving him and my kitty won't wake up. He hasn't gone after my hair for a good two nights now. Now, he sleeps under the blankets cuddled right up against me. If he starts hogging up the pillows, I keep four around and only use three to get cozy. ^^ Thanks for the help.
