What dry food is "like" Iams?

Question:
Is there a good dry food that has a similar texture and taste to Iams dry? My baby will only eat Iams at the moment because that's what he ate in his old home but I'm worried abotu the meat by-products and I want to wean him off it as soon as possible. I have a bag of Evolve Dry Food but all 3 of my cats despise it. I don't want to waste too much money buying bags of dry only to have to discard them.
Answer:
I'm not sure what is similar to Iams, but as far as buying bags that get wasted, why not ask the manager of whatever store you buy your food from if you can return the bag if the cats don't like it.
I know petsmart has a return policy like this, but they don't carry many decent foods... you can also try the sampler pack they sell at the cat connection website. It has small (1-2 meal) bags of a few different brands. I found it very helpful www.thecatconnection.com

Answer:
You can try Royal Canin.. I know my pet store sells small trial size bags for $1.99.

Answer:
thanks both of you!
Answer:
They might like canned foods better, you might want to consider that avenue if you still have a hard time with them.
It's definitely cheaper trying to find a canned food they like since you only have to pay for one or two cans at a time.

I would recommend Innova or Wellness. Just a sprinkle at first, then build gradually....25%, then 50%, then 75%, the 100% the new. It may take a good bit of time, but will normally work.

It's been a while since I sampled Iams...probably 5 years or so, and I'm sure the formula's changed since then...will also vote for Wellness, which I've found to be somewhat similar in size and shape to the old Iams Hairball control...I think that Innova may possibly be a bit closer in mouth feel and texture, though. But whenever you're changing foods, slow and easy is the way to go. Stomach upset and diarrhea seem to be more common when changing dry foods than when changing canned foods, so it's doubly important to go slow and gradually increase the new food over a period of weeks (or a month if your cat is sensitive to dietary changes). Also, make sure you compare the number of kcals per cup of food, as higher-quality foods are more nutritionally dense and you'll need to feed less of them to maintain the cat's weight...just swapping out cup for cup could get you a pudgy kitty. Will also second Padunk's suggestion of trying canned food, as well.
Not sure about Innova, but I know that Wellness makes small sample bags of its dry adult formulas, so you might be able to pick a couple up at a small, independently-owned pet supply store.
