Kidney problems (9 months-old)
Question: Hello, My cat just went for her first visit to the vet (too late as I realised) and I'm a really freaking out. She's 9 months and the vet has found that she has anormaly big kidneys. I guess it's pretty serious because the vet told me I should take immediate measures if I want my cat to live 10 years and not 3 The vet told me it was because of cat food I was feeding her (Whiskas). It was a bit surprising as I feed her mostly raw beef liver, sometimes packed wet food, and usually leave a bit of dry food for her to nimble during my 12-hour working day. The vet also said that she's losing her hair because of the bad quality of the food. The vet advised to feed her oatmeal with pieces of raw heart. First time I hear of such a diet. What do you think? Please reply as I'm really quite distressed Answer: Well, oatmeal is certainly not a staple diet for a cat! Has your cat had blood work done to test her kidney function? You might want to get a second opinion. Heart is an excellent source of taurine but should not be given in very large amounts, nor on a daily basis. My cats get heart as a fortnightly treat. Although Whiskas is not the best quality food, I have never experienced it causing problems with the kidneys, especially at this young age. If this was my cat, I'd want to know how the kidneys are functioning, and I'd probably want to get an ultrasound scan and/or xray done to have a look in there. I very much doubt that the vet is NOT feeling the kidneys when he says they are enlarged, but it might be worth a second opinion. I don't know if I'd trust a vet who recommended a diet solely of heart and oats for my cat! Good luck, and please come back to update. Ems Click here for Ruffdogs Dog Forum!
