fleas medication

Question:
My silly cat got fleas somehow and I Would like to know your opinion on cheap squeeze-ons for cats, I know frontline and Advantage work wonders but they are kind of expensive, and I know some cheap products that love cats, but I found a product in a major-well known pet store called PURRScriptions squeeze-on , is it going to kill my cat?, do you have reviews?
Answer:
I had quite a time finding this information, so here it is in case anybody has an answer: the active ingredients in the above-mentioned product are: "etofenprox 55% and pyriproxyfen 2.2% Other ingredients: 42.8%"
In researching those ingredients, I found this that worries me: Quote: Etofenprox is a non-ester pyrethroid insecticide with comparable toxicity and a similar mode of action to other pyrethroids (from PubMed)
Was not pyrethrin the chemical in other flea treatments that turned out to be hazardous to cats?
I didn't find anything worrisome about the other ingredient, but limited time prevented a thorough search.
IMO, I'd hesitate to use this product.

Answer:
Talk to your vet about a safe flea medication to use on cats - some store
bought ones are dangerous to them.
Answer:
Yes, Tim, pyrethrin is dangerous for cats.
I would not use any over the counter flea treatment. It's just not worth the risk for a few bucks and they aren't as effective anyway.
Answer:
Do you have other cats or dogs? I have 2 cats and 2 big dogs... I only buy the large dog advantage for 55# and over.. and use a small syringe w/removable needle.. to take out what I need for the two cats. cats under 9# get .4ml and cats over 9# get .8 ml... basically the big dog advantage is 4.0 ml... so you can treat 5 big cats with one 4.0 tube.. its much more cost effective.. than buying the cat advantage.. and its the same product... cool huh?
Answer:
Except on the Drs. Foster & Smith website under the product info for Advantage it says "Do not use dog products on cats." So I'm wondering why it would say that.

Answer:
But do you guys think Advantage or Frontline are ok?, I mean no cat has died with those brands, have they? Which one is better anyways?

Advantage is the exactly the same product for both dogs and Cats.. just different dosages... It is absolutely safe.. as long as your using the correct dosage..
NOw Advantix.. is DIFFERENT.. and can not be used on Cats..... My guess is that they( Foster and Smith) would rather you buy the cat stuff .. hence they make more $$$.. Especially if you have multiple cats... you'll be buying it more often...
I worked for a Veterarian when Advantage first came out.. and we would always offer the big dog packages to our clients with Multiple cats.. it really helped make the product affordable... anyways.. if you have any doubts.. call the Bayer Company.. they will tell you the same thing.. its the same product for both Dogs and Cats... good luck....
Just make sure you use a syringe that has a removable needle and dont puncture the tube.. so you can finish the rest of it the following month...
Answer:
You're probably right. I couldn't find the same caution on the Bayer website. (I couldn't find much useful information at all on their website, unlike most manufacturers.)
PS - do you have the "Disable BBCode" box checked under the post edit window? Your code for the quote should have worked.

Answer:
I saved almost $20 by buy my Frontline Top Spot from 1800petmeds.com. Petco was chargeing nearly 50$ with tax and Petmeds wanted $35 ish ( I also had a coupon for free shipping) So it worked out really well, and you don't need perscription for Frontline. I believe this is the cheapest SAFE flea spot treatment out there.
edit: this was for three months worth of medication = 3 tubes. ( though the package says you can go up to 6 weeks per tube)

What does that mean? yes I did have it checked.. I unchecked it... I am still very new to the forum and appreciate all the help I can get
thanks
Answer:
Unchecking that box only enables BBCode to work for that one post. If you go to your profile settings (click "Profile" - top of page), then scroll down to "Preferences", and set the "Always allow BBCode" item to "Yes", then click "Submit" at the bottom of the profile page.
