Baby rejected by mom (Chinchilla)

Question:
Posting for a friend... She had two chinchilla litters born today. One was a litter of one and the other a litter of two. The mom of the litter of one is acting afraid of the baby and is running away. I've never had this happen before. Can anyone recommend anything? Should she put the baby with the mom of the litter of two?

Answer:
Gosh, I have no advice to offer, the poor baby! Any updates? Is she a first-time mom that just freaked out?

Answer:
Yes, she is a first time mom. It doesn't help that my friend has a VERY bad case of the flu. She hasn't answered her e-mail yet. I'm thinking she just might try putting the baby with the mom that has two and supplement if necessary. I'm not sure if the new mom will snap out of it

Answer:
I know that when Livvie first had Lucy.. I was kind of freaking because she was always getting up on the shelf and avoiding Lucy.. so I was worried too that she wasnt going to be feeding her.. it was her first baby also.. so it might just be something she just isnt sure of yet..
hope that your friend does get the mommie to feed the baby... or if not then the other mother will take care of it.. good luck to her

Answer:
Brenda, has she eaten the afterbirth? I noticed that Hazel was VERY jumpy until she had eaten the afterbirth and then she calmed down and started being a mom. Also, it may take her a little while to adjust if she's a nervous mom. If mom isn't keeping her warm, I would definitely put her in with someone else.

Answer:
Update, mom briefly took care of the baby then stopped again. When offered to another new mommy, same thing. My friend has been supplementing but it appears there maybe something wrong with the baby and the mommy's know it

Answer:
I think mom's can definately sense if their kits have something wrong and won't be able to survive.
How is the kit doing now?

Answer:
Unfortunately despite all efforts, the little guy died

Answer:
I'm sorry to hear that I guess mom had the right instinct. Do you know what was wrong with the kit?

Answer:
I'm so sorry Brenda.
