Setting # Limits
Question: I am wondering how, & when, people decide they have *enough* pets. Obviously someone like Suzoo who fosters, or a breeder like Ilse, has a different # than someone who is offering permanent home to a pet, but I would like to hear people's thoughts. I am reaching saturation point now, w/ 1 hedgie, 1 cat, 2 gp's & a chilla, but I am also open to more gp's, particularly rescues. However I just dropped $100 of birthday money on Oxbow from Montreal, & spent another $20 on treats for the critters w/ ratlady last week, so I am definitely thinking about #s right about now!!! What is *your* limit? (I don't think Denise has one!!! ) Answer: I seem to have a low limit for number of pets. Since losing the two cats, I'm not feeling much like getting more pets, though I would like some more baby chicks or some eggs for our broody hen Kiwi to hatch. I think about getting some other birds, like ducks or quail, or pigeons. I'd like to get two sheep but worry about the care they will require and especially all the fencing and housing they will need, and feed storage, etc. Seems like so much responsibility. I don't seem to be taking any steps toward getting more pets right now. The $$$ is another issue, of course, a big one. Answer: My number is only limited by funds, time & space. Right now space is my issue. Once I am in a house, my numbers will go up. Once I get get the farm house we want, they will go up again. And then we will see where the funds will allow . ( where I am now, I am at my limit of cats & dogs - chins I can fit 1, maybe 2 more cages, then I'm tapped). Answer: Neuro, you mean no limit in spending money or no limit in how many pets? I think I have reached my limit in the number of chinnies I have. 10 is a perfect number for me because I have enough time to give them all love and affection and can spend money freely on them for both material things and health care. Even though I have a great paying job and I feel optimistic that I won't get laid off, anything can happen. It is always good to have the "What if?" philosophy. I feel the more pets one has, the more money is required to take care of them and what if I lose my job? I want to know each and every one of my pets is taken care of in an event like that. Aside from the chinnies, we plan on adopting 1 or 2 American Staffs when we buy a house. To me, that is more than enough pets. I wouldn't feel comfortable having mixed species under my care because I would feel too overwhelmed with different diets, care, etc. Answer: It seems like you have no limit on chinchillas!! I sometimes feel overwhelmed by my species as you mention, but luckily bf takes great care of them for me when I need a break. One thing I cannot imagine is adding a dog to the mix. A ferret, bird or more gp's, yes, but no dogs!! Answer: One thing I cannot imagine is adding a dog to the mix I know what you mean!! I like dogs, but I discovered that there are lots of people with dogs in my neighborhood, so whenever I need to have a dog moment, I just go ask someone if I can take theirs out for a walk. Dogs are great cause they don't care who takes them out, they just love you for doing it. Most people will let you walk their dog too, cause they don't always have time. It's all the fun of having a dog, but without the commitment and responsibility. Answer: Well, I'm currently at my maximum for the most part. 4 Cats can be overwhelming at times. Would I give them up?? No! Would I get more cats? Probably not. Eli and McCaille are both coming on 7 now, so their mostly independant and very picky about when they want lovin's. Ladybug is very clingy. Number One is currently in that, I want lovin's but I"m going to make you work very hard to give it to me. The dog, she is so clingy it gets extremely annoying at times, so its a big no on getting any more dogs. I love dogs, but don't have the time for the big type dogs I want, and really don't like small dogs, so Libby will be our only dog for quite some time. The chins, once Tim and I decided to start breeding, I set my limit at 30 Adults, we are currently at 28, 2 of which are still babies, and a couple of non breeders. I can already say that it will take something very drastic for us to not have at least one chin at any time from here on out. Answer: I keep saying that I'm at my limit... but we have an adorable black velvet at work I've always wanted a BV but I also want to keep my couch... what to do.... Answer: Well, I lied, I now have 7 cats. So much for my limit...darn adopt-a-thon days! Answer: people say i have too many pets, but i think its untrue. we have 3 cats, 2 dogs, 8 chinchillas, and 3 gerbils. i think i would have to say my limit for chinchillas would have to be cages (or space) for right now i have 1 space to fill, nemo needs a friend and we are going to welcome a bv male into our herd saturday. then i think we'll hold off on buying more chinchillas. i think you should set your limits on what you can handle.
