Bedding Dilemna

Question:
It is incredibly hard for me to get spruce bedding these days. I have to travel an hour each way by bus & I can only carry 2 bags @ a time.
Lately (I know, I know) I have been forced to use pine bedding.
It was either that or plain newspaper.
I know pine is harmful, but I am @ a loss as for what else to bed my gp's on.
They really dislike the feel of Yesterday's News underfoot, & I can't afford Carefresh.
Is there any way to make the pine safer?

Answer:
Why no get kiln dried pine ?? Its the bedding I always use as to many many ohters. Also even it I let it air out open a couple of days just to be on the safe side.

Answer:
Oh I should note that it took *3 HOURS* to get here last time I went to that pet store w/ the spruce.
The pine I've seen available here doesn't seem to be kiln-dried.
Many suppliers seem to use pine sawdust or even a pine/cedar mix.
It's really discouraging that someone like Sunseed doesn't package & market a widely-available spruce or other hardwood shaving.

Answer:
Neuro, there are no PetSmarts in your area?

Answer:
Denise, petsmarts are not really anywhere in Canada (the only one I know of is in Vancouver but there could be a few in Toronto as well)
Neuro, couldn't your regular pet store order in some kiln dried pine or spruce for you? They've ordered stuff for you in the past so I don't see why they couldnt' do this.

Answer:
There's quite a few Petsmart in the TO area. I drive from Sudbury to Barrie just to go to Petsmart. I do this once or twice a year. It's a 3.5 hour drive each way.

Answer:
See? I figured Toronto would have some as well

Answer:
We have a couple of PetsMarts in Ottawa too!
I use pine in my guinea pig cage with no problem... though I prefer Aspen and it doesn't come in big bags.. so I use it for the chinnies & spiny mice..

Answer:
Too bad you don't have a walmart- they carry a generic carefresh for $3.50/10l
Have you tried calling feed stores/tractor supply places? (I don't know what area you live in- suburb, rural, etc) You might can get some kiln-dried or hemp bedding at a place like that- and usually very cheap.

Answer:
There are one or two PetsMarts in Calgary too. It is too bad that there isn't a UFA where you live. Four cubic kild-dried pine for $6.99 and quite often on sale for $4.99! Plus it is a 3 minute drive from my house. I hope you can find a place closer to you that has what you're looking for
