Pit bulls :: Breed Specific Legislation
Question: Poll: Should pit bulls be banned in Ontario? http://www.bluepdoo.com/petforum/viewtopic.php?t=57 I didn't see any topics relating to this issue... Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant recently proposed legislation that will ban pit bulls in Ontario. The information he has used to back up his claims has been deceitful, innacurate and ficiticious. The legislation is referred to as BILL 132 http://www.ontla.on.ca/documents/Bil...sion1/b132.pdf Unfortunately, most Ontarians think this bill is ONLY about banning pit bulls. They do not realize that it also includes amendments to the 'Dog Owners Liability Act' which affects all dogs, regardless of breed or mix. Essentially what this bill does is make it 'legal' for someone to beat a dog and claim the dog had acted in an aggressive or menacing manner. The new law will allow proceedings to commence if it is "alleged" that your dog acted in a manner deemed menacing (by the person making the claim). This also includes if your dog barks at, chases, growls at or acts in any aggressive manner towards other dogs, cats, small animals, rodents, birds. etc. Its a sneaky intolerable move on the part of the Liberals and it has to be stopped before thousands of animals start getting killed. I have set up a poll on my site to see how accurate the Liberals claims are that "most Ontarians fear pit bulls - a lot!". From the results so far, that doesnt appear to be the case. Please visit and vote, you do not have to join the forum to do so. http://www.bluepdoo.com/petforum/viewtopic.php?t=57 When asked to define pit bulls the Attorney General said that anything that "if it looks like a pit bull and barks and wags its tail like a pit bull, it's a pit bull". He later said he would use the Winnipeg bylaw which defines 'pit bull dog' as a: (i) Pit Bull Terrier; or (ii) Staffordshire Bull Terrier; or (iii) American Staffordshire Terrier; or (iv) American Pit Bull Terrier; Bryant held no open, public hearings before deciding to go ahead with a ban and he also refused to hear from dog experts including the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association. There is still a chance to stop this legislation before it passes, as it must now be voted on by Ontario MPPs. We urgently need your help in stopping this ban before it passes. Online petition to stop breed specific legislation (pit bull ban): http://www.petitiononline.com/newban2/petition.html Ontario Veterinary Medical Association opposed breed ban (despite Bryants claims they support it): http://www.ovma.org/pdf/pitbullban.pdf Debunking Michael Bryant: http://www.dogwatch.net/fight_ontari...el_bryant.html OSPCA opposes breed ban: http://www.ospca.on.ca/libr_pr_2004_Oct28.html http://www.ospca.on.ca/libr_pr_2004_Oct18.html Canadian Federation of Humane Societies opposes breed ban: http://www.cfhs.ca/GeneralInfo/Media/indexpbulls.htm Toronto Humane Society opposes breed ban: http://www.torontohumanesociety.com/inthenews/ban.html Animal Alliance of Canada opposes breed ban: http://www.animalalliance.ca/pressroom/index.html There are many more animal organizations across Canada who oppose breed specific bans but the Ontario Liberal governement is refusing to listen to or meet with experts. This is a 'one man show' - a guy who doesnt like dogs deciding the fate of all our pets. BSL is just that - BS legislation. I absoloutly love the breed and plan to own one, one day but if people keep up with this junk, I may never get to own one, and it makes me really disapointed! Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
