early spay/neuter
Question: what do you guys think of early spaying and neutering??? I know with ferrets they spay between 3-6 weeks and I have read so so so many articles about them thinking the reason alot of ferrets have early health problems is becuase of the early spay/neuter!! another thing , on one of the parrot boards that i visit , theres a lady who got her rottie early neutered, she has an unfixed female pitbull , shes registred, etc and she also shows her, she was planning on getting a stud and breeding her, anyways one day her pit gave birth to 1 puppy, apparently her male was fixed to young and wasnt developed enough so they didnt get "everything" so now she has to go and get him neutured again!! I was just wondering about your thoughts on this? Answer: Early spay/neuter done by an experienced vet shouldn't cause any problems whatsoever. I am a strong advocate for early spay/neuter and any of my future pets will be fixed early. As for the women with the unfixed rottie, that can happen even when the neuter is done later. Answer: it can? how the heck does that happen? Answer: If the entire tissue of the testicle is not removed, sperm can still be produced. Answer: wow, I didnt know that!! learn something new everyday! Answer: Early spaying and neutering is great as long as done correctly by an experienced vet. We have had far less aggression or health problems with our pets who have been spayed/neutered at a young age versus when they were older. Answer: yah but I dont mean like 4-6 mths, I mean like 4-6 weeks early spay and neuter!! Answer: Most shelters and vets that I know around here wait until 8-12 weeks. A lot of reputable dog breeders (who are concerned about accidental litters) will spay/neuter around 7-8 weeks and the pups do just fine. Answer: I don't know much about ferrets so I can't help you there. But with dogs we wait until our are about 4-6 months old. I think that 4-6 weeks is definatley too young, I guess I didn't read your post correctly the first time...oops Answer: hmmmm i would hate to meet the vet that didnt know what a whole testicle looked like even a vet student should know that!!! i wonder if that rottie wasnt a cryptorchid and had the one testicle left behind. and yea dogs/cats shouldnt be neutered/spayed before 8wks.
