Why are people so obsessed with breeding?
Question: I frequent many pet forums and I am very disturbed by the number of people who are breeding that shouldn't be. Why do people think that they can get an animal and then start breeding, like it's no big deal? Recently, I came across someone who felt that with a lot of hope and love, they wouldn't need a c-section for their pregnant chin. People like this seem to be running rampant? And don't even talk to them about quality and bettering the breed...that would be way over their heads. But honestly, why do people do this? I don't get it. Answer: Candice, I get so annoyed when I see people breeding animals that have no business doing so. The lure for breeding is seeing cute, soft, furry, babies. People on forums post pictures of newborn babies and the ignorant member sees that and thinks, "Gosh, that is sooo cute. I want to do that"! After all, it doesn't take much intelligence to put a male and female together and see what happens. They don't care about the lineage of the animal, health, quality, or cost of breeding. I also think these people think it is cool to say, "I am a breeder"! In reality being a breeder is much more than putting two animals together and resulting in babies. That doesn't make a person a "breeder". An idiot? Yes! A breeder? NO! I guess when go deeper into the question at hand and ask why idiots own animals period. Answer: Candice, I know which forum and which person you are speaking of!! Please check out my response. I'm kind of angry to speak at the moment Answer: I saw your response. Thanks for the back-up...again. I just don't get why people would do this to animals that they supposedly love. Why are all these people so set on breeding? Can't they just enjoy the company of the animals they have now? Why put them in danger just to have cute babies? And I won't even go into the financial part! Most of these people I come across have NO idea how much this could possibly cost. Answer: and you can tell the really good breeders from the bad when they someone jumps around from species to species without sticking to one animal for years. or someone had 15 different species they breed. this isnt quite the same in the reptile world but it sure is in the mammal world. i too dont get why every tom dick and harry want to get in on breeding!! Answer: I think it's a "prestige" thing as well. I belonged to another forum where it seemed that every day another member popped up, stating that they intended to breed rats. They hadn't a clue how to breed responsibly - I think they just liked the way it sounded: "I'm a breeder". There was one young girl with no job, hardly any money, living in a tiny one-bedroom apartment with her boyfriend, with her rats living in the closet with the door closed to "protect them from the cigarette smoke". I talked to this girl rationally, pointing out the various (and many!) reasons why she should not breed just then. ((This was back in the days that I actually had the patience to try to reason with people like that)). She listened to everything I said, then went ahead and started breeding!! A few months down the road she dumped all her rats (and the rats of a co-breeder) at a shelter. And expected the shelter to pay HER for the rats!!!! Answer: I dont think that it is fair to be saying that all breeders are bad. I am a breeder and I enjoy what I do, even if it includes cleaning tons of cages and buying expensive food. Breeders of couse have to be responsible breeders and only breed to perfect their breed of rabbit. Plus there are many other things you have to follow to be a responsible breeder such as, only sell to people who are knowledgable about rabbits, and sell only pedigreed rabbits. But I was once one of those "breeders running rampant" and they just need more information and some one to tell them what is right and what is wrong.... Answer: I agree there are so many people breeding when they shouldn't be, especially teenagers. I mean I love animals, and I'm a teenager, but you don't see me running off to buy some male and female rabbits to get babies. Of course I have nothing against breeders that are responsible and take good care of their animals. It's just so irritating some times. Answer: One one particular forum it seems every tom, dick, and harry wants to breed. It does annoy the crap out of me, because I'm trying to take the time to get good animals to breed, as are many other breeders. Yet these people don't care, and are ruining it for the good breeders. I honestly feel each person breeding should hold a license for each species they are going to breed, need to re-new the license yearly, have inspections, and have to take a test before they get their license and renewed to insure they know what they are doing. I think this would make a lot of the bad breeders stop breeding. Unfortantly, it's never going to happen. Answer: I dont agree with all breeders, there are so many unwanted animals in shelters, why add to the numbers? If you are looking for a pet, go to a rescue center etc..
