Texas woman gets bread and water for horse cruelty

HOUSTON, Texas (Reuters) -- A Texas woman convicted of neglecting her two horses will get only bread and water for the first three days of a 30-day jail sentence, a judge said Tuesday.
The Old West-style punishment was fitting for a crime in which Melissa Dawn Sweeney, 28, treated the horses "deplorably," County Court at Law Judge Mike Peters said.
"I used to think back to the time when jail was jail and punishment was punishment, and how they were put in solitary confinement with only bread and water to eat. That was in the back of my mind," he told Reuters.
Sweeney, a former stable worker, was convicted Friday of cruelty to animals for leaving her two horses unfed and unsheltered for four months outside her mobile home in Baytown, Texas, the Houston Chronicle said.
Peters said the horses were more than 200 pounds underweight and in poor health.
"The animals were literally starved," he said. One of them had to be euthanized, while the other recovered under the care of a new owner.
Sweeney testified that she fed the animals and treated them well but said they were in poor condition because they were old.
Peters also required Sweeney to post a photo of the malnourished horses in her jail cell.
"I want her to be forever reminded of what her conduct did to those horses," he said.

Answer:
I think three days is not enough but I suppose it's a step in the right direction.

Answer:
I'm with you. She should have had bread and water the whole thirty days. And the pictures of the starving horses tattooed on her hands.

Answer:
Ha! 3 days is nothing! I guess it is better than nothing at all but she deserves whatever she did to those poor horses. Considering how severely underweight the horses are, I can imagine how long she starved them.

Answer:
I think she deserved, not only jail-time but a huge fine $$$... Hit her where it counts.. in the $$ wallet! Four months doesn't seem long enough to get an animal in that condition, I'm sure she starved them longer than that! She should have to pay the euthanasia fee plus the Vet bills to get the surviving horse better... as well as a huge fine for the cruelty! If she couldn't afford to feed them she should have sold them or given them away before they got to that condition...

Answer:
If she subjected those poor horses to at least four months of cruelty, then she should get at least four months in jail, not just 30 days

Answer:
Well, atleast it's a step. Hopefully one day it will be more fitting.

Answer:
I agree, it's a step in the right direction but 3 days really can't compare to how much the horse suffered under her 'care'.

Answer:
Also what is with this 30 days bologna...I just LOVE (being sarcastic here) how people can kill or starve animals and get next to nothing but the minute you do something that does not even cause mortal harm to someone you get like 10 years...the justice system is quite skewed if you ask me....

Answer:
from what i understand it's not even consecutive time..she spends weekends in jail...till thirty days has been served..during the week she gets to go home to her kids...bah
