Dog and Cat food
Question: I just want anyone in Canada who uses Purina One that you really can get a free bag or a $10 off cupon from their site. We're working on switching our cat over and she loves it. I'm not sure if this offer is good anywhere else but be sure to check their website. Answer: Just know that Purina isn't a very good quality food. It can pretty much be compared to IAMS and Eukaneuba... I guess that's why its free lol Answer: unfortunately, i have to agree. you really should try and find something else. most animals love cheap food for the same reason we love mcdonalds! but you can find good food that the cat will like, too! have you tried any of the Nutro foods? Answer: Its not as bad as you think. I work in the pet section of a local store and 2 or 3 times a week someone brings in a list of things the vet says to stay away from and to limit to a certain amount and we go through EVERY bag and most of the time the right specifications are found in IAMS, Actruim and One in the dry food and surprisingly enough we find a lot of whats needed in the stores brand dry food. The exceptions seem to be anything with fish it in. My cats has also gone down from being a fat cat into being in much better shape while on it. Answer: The exceptions should include, by-products, unnatural preservatives, and low quality fillers, like corn and brewer's rice. Unfortunately, many vets are not very knowledgeable in the area of nutrition. There are some interesting discussions here on dog and cat foods. Purina One isn't the worst food you could feed, but there are better options out there. Though, if I recall correctly, they are more difficult find out East. Answer: Oh I know corn and rice are big no's in pet food and I tell people that. Very hard on pets a rule of thumb look for it far down in the ingredients. The sad thing is most people I see buy pet food where that is the second thing on the list. I have a list of preservatives at work that I tell people to stay clear of. There was one type a byzonite or something that looks close to that spelling that I spent looking for an hour for and a half for any food that didn't have it in it. There were one brand and two who had it low on their list. The by-products is a new one for me. I'll check it out and make a list for work. And what I meant by the fish was that when people are looking into a certain percent of something in a food usually the ones with a fish product will be 2 or 3 precent higher. Someone explained it to me one day and I can't remember why now then again I was up all night cramming for an exam lol...ah to be young and trying to escape to summer. Answer: Whole rice (especially brown) isn't horrible. All dry foods contain a filler of some kind. But when a company starts using by-products of grains, that is not good either...like brewer's rice. The Chicken and "Rice" (should be Brewer's Rice) formula of Purina One Cat looks like this. You'd be suprised to see that this food has "rice" and corn as the number 2 and 3 ingredients. Chicken, brewers rice, corn gluten meal, poultry by-product meal, wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), wheat gluten, whole grain corn, fish meal, brewers dried yeast, potassium chloride, malted barley flour, animal digest, calcium carbonate, salt, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, choline chloride, taurine, phosphoric acid, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, copper sulfate, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), sodium selenite. C-4153 I do agree that filler's shouldn't be too high in the list, but they also shouldn't be mentioned in more than a couple of spots. The One has brewer's rice, corn gluten meal, wheat flour, wheat gluten, and whole grain corn, all within the first 10 ingredients. Not only that, they are all low quality fillers and are basically throw-aways of other industries. Look for whole grain rice or oatmeal as a filler instead. Preservatives to avoid: BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin. Fish can be dangerous because of the magnesium. Too much can lead to urinary crystals and stones. Also, one other thing that is really disappointing about Purina One. It includes animal fat and animal digest. Now, what do you think that is? The answer, well, we'll never know. The company uses that collective feed term on purpose so that they can make a least cost feed. If chicken fat is cheap that week, they can buy that up. Next week, beef fat is cheap, they can use that instead...or any combination of animals. And this means any animal...including cats and dogs. I would hope that Purina wouldn't stoop this low but legally, they can include ANY animal. Kudos to you for doing your research and trying to learn more about the foods that your store sells. Answer: And just for comparison sake, here are the ingredients to a better quality (IMHO) food. Wellness Super5Mix Adult Cat Food Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Chicken Liver, Ground Brown Rice, Ground Whole Oats, Canola Oil (Preserved With Mixed Tocopherols & Rosemary), Cranberries, Blueberries, Flaxseed, Eggs, Peas, Taurine, Garlic, Alfalfa Leaf, Spirulina, Norwegian Kelp, Whole Apples, Zucchini, Sweet Potatoes, Yucca Schidigera, Chondroitin Sulfate, Glucosamine, Pro-Biotics (Lactobacillus Plantarum, Enterococcus Faecium, Lactobacillus Casei, Lactobacillus Acidophilus), Pre-Biotics (Mannanoligosaccharides), Beta-Carotene, Choline Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Zinc Proteinate (A Chelated Source Of Zinc), Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Oxide, Ferrous Sulfate, Iron Proteinate (A Chelated Source Of Iron), Manganese Proteinate (A Chelated Source Of Manganese), Calcium Pantothenate, Niacin Supplement, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin A Acetate, Folic Acid, Cobalt Proteinate (A Chelated Source Of Cobalt), Copper Sulfate, Cobalt Carbonate, Riboflavin Supplement (Vitamin B-2), Copper Proteinate (A Chelated Source Of Copper), Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Calcium Iodate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source Of Vitamin K Activity). Notice the two grain fillers, brown rice and whole oats. As you can see, these two foods are drastically different in their ingredients.
