Bat for a Pet?

Question:
My daughter found a little bat today stuck up on the side of Sobeys. She went into the $1 store and bought a little cage and brought him home.

She called me at work to tell me.

So I looked up pet bats on the internet. Apparently, they're not pets. All I kept finding was rabies, rabies, rabies.

So my dilema is, how do I let him go? She has him in a mayo bottle and he's hanging upside down on some mesh wire she put in there. He's really tiny and cute, although I can't really get a good look at him because the jar keeps glaring.

We used to have lots of bats here. There's a church next to us that used to have them living in the roof or there about. The roof has since been reshingled and now there's very few bats. We have to really watch for them where before, they were everywhere. You could just look up and they'd be buzzing all around, it was really neat.

I'm thinking, we take him over to the church when it starts to get dark and try to put the bottle up somewhere, maybe on a window ledge or something and see if he can find a friend?? There's no trees close to the church....

Any suggestions? ....before he wakes up...

Oh, the internet also said, if you're able to catch a bat, there's probably something wrong with it, so I'm a little worried that he's sick. I would try to keep him a while just to see what could be done for him but I have my suggies here and I don't want them catching anything. Apparently, bats teeth are so sharp it's like getting pricked by a needle and you wouldn't be able to find the bite site.

Answer:
I would call local wildlife authorities and see if they might be able to do something. I would definitely not keep a wild bat. The authorities might have access to some wildlife refuges that could care for the little guy/gal and get them back into the wild.

Answer:
Great tip Sophie, I called the local vet and they gave me a number of a rehab. So I'm off to drop him off. I called and left a message, I hope someone's there when I get there......I also hope I find the place, the directions are pretty fuzzy. Will let you know how it goes. Going to be over an hour before I get back......

Craig has brought 2 bats home from Sobeys, he brings them home in a cardboard box, we just set it outside and open the box top and they crawl out and fly away,,thats all we did

Answer:
So apparently he's not a baby. The rehab place doesn't take bats, but she said she would take him and let him go when it got dark because he looked healthy and wasn't hurt. She said he was very fat so maybe he'd eaten a lot last night and was just really full and never got back to his own home. They're not supposed to take bats because of rabies. She also said that he'd be fine, because I'd asked if I should take him back to where my daughter found him. He apparently doesn't need other bats to survive.

We played with the cutest little raccoon. She is three months old. Still being bottle fed. I could've taken her home with me she was soooo cute. Just a little bundle of energy too. They had birds of all kinds. OH I FORGOT! When we got there, the house is up behind the sheds where the animals are kept. So we headed for the house to see if anyone was home and a huge raven swooped down from the roof at us. My daughter didn't know what to do, he was huge. He waddled right up to me squaking all the way. The lady there told me later you've got to watch your toes around him, lol. Anyway, he was looking for food and I was able to give him a rub, although she said he doesn't like to be touched. They do hand feed him though. He was rehabilitated and now just doesn't leave even though he's free to go

They had a 3 legged fox. She got into garbage and ate too much junk and candy and got _____ can't remember the word, but it makes their bones brittle. She then broke her leg and it had to be amputated. There were 27 raccoons outside that will be released very soon, a big black squirrel from Ontario. He was huge and was just a baby she said. Some people had smuggled him here and then when the skipped out on their rent, they left him behind. He's to friendly to release and they wouldn't release him here because our red squirrels would kill him. He's being shipped back to Ontario to a wildlife refuge. Tonnes of birds outside too. All the animals seemed so friendly, it's hard to believe they can be released but apparently they can!!

Answer:
wow sounds like a great place!!!

Im glad the bat will be set free

Answer:
Sounds like the bat gave you a nice an pleasant afternoon trip I'm glad to hear he/she can be released with no consequences to its health.

Answer:
They are going to set free a bat that your daughter handled!?!? I'm sorry, but for the sake of your daughter, that bat should be humanely euthanized and tested for rabies! A healthy bat would NOT let a human catch it! There obviously was something wrong with the bat if he was out during the daytime and let your daughter touch it! I don't know how prevalent bat rabies is on the east coast, but it exists here in Eastern Ontario -- just last week in Ottawa, we had a bat test positive for rabies and now the 15 year old girl that had kept it for two weeks, trying to rehabilitate it, needs immediate and serious medical care! If it's not too late, tell the rehab woman to hang onto the bat and call your local branch of the Health Dep't!
