In Memory of Squeak

Question:
Squeak was my 3rd rattie. I got her a few days after I got Peaches, at the same store that Peaches came from. Squeak came from the "feeder tank." I was pretty new to ratties then and I was apalled at the conditions that the "feeders" were being kept in as opposed to the "fancies." Squeak was just as fancy as the fancy rats, but she was so young that it automatically made her a feeder, because she wasn't expected to live.

I went to the store that day wanting to save a "feeder." There were so many and it was really hard to choose. I decided that I wanted to save a baby because they were most likely to be snakefood. The tank was totally overcrowded. I remember that ratties were piled on top of each other and they barely had any room. I put my hand in and played with some of the ratties. Thats when I saw little Squeak climb out of the rattie pile. She was super tiny but she seemed pretty healthy. I listened to her lungs and they sounded ok. I took her home.

Squeak slept a lot for the first few days and I wasn't sure if she would make it. She was really too young to be away from her mom. I couldn't believe that she had survived such conditions, being as young as she was. I made sure that she had lots of soymilk to drink and other high protein, nutritious foods.

Squeak loved to sleep in the food bowls. I gave her her own bowl so the other ratties had a bowl that didn't contain Squeak. Squeak loved to steal food from the other bowls and put it in hers. She also had a wood chew that she was VERY proud of.

Eventually, she outgrew the food bowls and started hanging out with the other girls.

She grew and grew and became a strong rattie. She was a calm rattie and was very easy going. She liked to sleep a lot. She was my most mellow rattie.

Squeakie had poor vision because she had ruby eyes. She would bob and weave her head back and forth so she could see better. When she first started doing this, I was worried, but then I looked it up on the net and found out it was normal. Her poor vision didn't keep her from having a great time during playtime.

Squeak's death was a shock to me. I really don't feel like she is gone. I will miss her so much. I'm glad that even though she had a short life, she was loved and had many rattie friends. I'm glad she died here with me instead of in that awful feeder tank.

Rest in peace Squeakie. You are with your friend Possum now.
