Interested in how you build your chinnie cages
Question: Hey guys, I know that a lot of you build your own chinnie cages, and I was wondering if someone could show me some pics and give me some info? I know that you use wood, but how do you make it waterproof? The reason that I'm asking is I would like to build a chinnie style/cabinet style cage for my rattie, Pistachio and his little friend (baby that isn't named yet). I found some rattie cages that reminded me of chinnie cages, but they looked a little complicated to build. Does anyone have any ideas for a simple and easy to build cage? It doesn't have to be huge but I want it to have at least two levels. Answer: Candice posted her cage plans in this thread: http://www.pets-on-the-net.com/forum...light=melamine Many people (myself included) build their chinchilla cages out of melamine. Melamine isn't exactly waterproof but it can be wiped clean. To stop urine from soaking through the bottom of the cage, you can put add a pull out metal pan to the bottom. I never built my cage, so I can't say how difficult it was to built - I know that it was expensive though... To see more examples of melamine cages and building tips, do a POTN search for melamine cages. In the meantime, I'll see if I can find any easy cage plans/designs online. Answer: Here's a page of links to homemade rat cages: http://www.geocities.com/ratsonthehill/cagecrafts.html I've looked through some of the links and they look quite good. Answer: All my rat cages are built- you can see them on my website. Answer: Originally Posted by jennawing All my rat cages are built- you can see them on my website. Wow you have a really nice web site and some great cage info! Answer: Originally Posted by veggiegirl Wow you have a really nice web site and some great cage info! I agree! Can't wait until you finish updating all of your sections. Answer: You know, I really don't think I have the tools to build any of those cages. Mike works 7 days a week, and it would be hard to get him to help. Even if he did, he doesn't have the tools either. I think I'm just going to buy another cage, and wait until we have a garage and tools before I attempt to make one. Thanks for the info though girls! Answer: Do you have any tools at all Steph (like a hammer and drill)? You can get people at building supply stores to cut any wood that you might need. We have a hammer. I think Mike has a drill but I don't think its here. He left a lot of his stuff with family members when we moved into our first apt.
