What animal...?

Question:
I am looking to get another animal, but I don't want one that is nocturnal. I would like one that is like a gerbil, asleep at odd integers during the day and night. I heard rats are nocturnal but will wake up and play with you if you step into the room. Is this true? If so I would love more information on them or any other small animal (preferably rodent like gerbil) that are dinural. Thanks

Answer:
Most rodents are thought to be nocturnal, but or really actually diurnal- awake at sunset and sunrise. Rats are great, though. I have 8 boys.

Answer:
I'm recommending ratties too!!! I just got two and will soon get one or two more, they're awesome, friendly, smart little furries!!

Answer:
What about degus? I actually don't think they are really nocturnal. Everytime I see them at any of my friends houses or at the petstore they are always awake lol.

Answer:
What about guinea pigs? They can be quite fun too.

Answer:
Yea my future mother in law had one but they smell so quickly don't they? I am trying to get one that is low maintenance because I am a college student. I know rats will be okay for me because I love to take them out and play with them, or degus, but do guinea pigs enjoy being picked up and played with? The past two I've known were terrified of being moved.

Answer:
You're a student, and want something low maintenance? How much time are you going to have with the critter? If you're not going to have a lot of time to spend with a pet, then perhaps you should get an aquarium set up. They are fun, and the fish react with you, and you can leave them alone for a day or to with no harm done.

Answer:
I would reccommend a pair of rats. They are low maintance and love attention and if you have two then on the days you can't spend as much time with them they will have a friend in with them.

Answer:
I think when I get another pet they will probably be rats. I have heard wonderful things about them. Do they smell quickly? I know guinea pigs can and I really don't want my home to smell like well, guinea pig or rat waste. Just a question. I do have a while to go before I can get another animal so I will be researching anything I consider a lot.

Answer:
Yes.. guinea pig cages would have be cleaned quite frequently (I clean mine thoroughly once a week but also do spot cleanings every other day).. I think a pair of rats would be the best bet.
