Pet-Safe cage questions

Question:
Is there any painting products or finishing products out there ... or combination of both ... that can be considered pet-safe? I wouldn't mind dabbing some paint on the hedgie's bucket wheels to make them look nicer ... or touching up my gliders home built cage to give it a nice finish ... or is there a type of pet-safe gloss that I can put over regular paint to render it pet-safe?
I've seen people build cages, but don't see anything mentioned about paint ... would regular house paint work out? Not as flooring ... but for the walls of the cage or something? And could acrylic water based paints work too? I really enjoy the looks of a stained wood finish ... but would it be safe?
Any help or links would be greatly appreciated

Answer:
Too late to edit ... but I meant "acrylic based paint" ... not "acrylic water based paint" ...

Answer:
From what I have heard, if you look for child/baby-safe paint, it is ok for pets too, AFTER it is dry. I have not painted anything myself however, this is just what I was told @ Canadian Tire.

Answer:
snr-j, did you manage to find a suitable product?
