Flea prevention/control
Question: What products do you use for flea prevention? I was reading this article on flea products: http://www.canismajor.com/dog/flea01.html and here are the brands they seem to recommend: The new generation of controls includes natural or genetically engineered pyrethrum, a daisy; flea-specific growth inhibitors (products containing fenoxycarb and methoprene); an environmental control that desiccates fleas and larvae; a once-a-month pill (Program) that prevents the formation of chitin, the flea's external body covering; and new surface products applied to the dog's skin or coat (Advantage and Frontline). Unlike the toxic insecticides in products such as Spotton, Proban, and Prospot, the ingredients in Frontline and Advantage are not absorbed into the bloodstream and are toxic only to fleas, not to dogs or their owners. Does anyone use Program, Advantage or Frontline? Answer: I use SENTINEL for my dogs. It's a heartworm & flea control pill given once a month for 6 months (depending where you live)... Answer: We use advantage for flea control. Answer: I haven;t used anything yet but my mom uses advantage but someone I know told me advantage isn;t good because you are not supposed to touch the dog for 48 hrs and to definately keep children away from them,,,,,,,thats what the vet told her anybody else heard this? Answer: Brandy...that's why I like Sentinel because it's pill form...not topical application Answer: Originally Posted by Brandy I haven;t used anything yet but my mom uses advantage but someone I know told me advantage isn;t good because you are not supposed to touch the dog for 48 hrs and to definately keep children away from them,,,,,,,thats what the vet told her anybody else heard this? No one has ever told me this, the brochure that I have from it says it is 100% safe. We have been using it for 8 years now without a problem. Answer: Thats good to hear,,,I will ask my vet what its all about,,she has never said anything about it but I haven;t talked flea prevention yet to her Answer: I was thinking of Sentinel too, I saw some ads for it on TV. I need to talk to the vet soon too because I think the girls also need to be tested for heartworm, I will know for sure what they need once my friend gives me their records. Answer: I'm currently using Revolution. It is for flea, heartworm and mite prevention. Answer: Here in Alberta, fleas aren't that big of a problem. Max had fleas when we first got him (he was a farm cat) and we treated with a type of spray...can't remember what it was though. The flea and heartworm in one sounds great though.
