Pet smell?

Question:
I was thinking about this 'cos when Josh took the dogs outside to go potty, he ran into my landlord who said that he doesn't want us to keep the dogs because he is showing the apartment to potential renters and he doesn't want the 'dog smell'.
Do you think that your pets smell?
Personally, a dog is a dog, they are gonna have their own smell. I don't complain about the 'human smell' (and believe me, some of the bums downtown can really smell) so I think this whole issue of pet smells is ridiculous.
However, I would think that the majority of the population are not too pet-friendly and pet smells is just another reason to discriminate against pet owners. I really don't think we can live in a world that only smells like a Glade plugin, sometimes I really get mad at people who think that animals smell and stink up the place and that they are dirty etc etc.

Answer:
the way I look it at it this way,,,,the pet is the owners responsibility ,,the animal will smell if not taken care of properly,....same as humans,,,if I stopped cleaning myself,,I would stink, if i stop cleaning the cages they will stink,,,,its up to us to keep the animal smells down,,,as for a dog I don't find they stink...there bedding will if you don;t wash it enoguh and the dog will to if not taken care of properly but I can only smell a dog smell on Sasha if I am actually smelling her,,I don't smell it in my place

Answer:
I do know that when you live with an animal or a person for so long you dont notice it. but when you walk into an empty place that has been cleaned. (dont know how good) you can smell if they had pets there before. but quite truthfully that shouldnt be a problem unless they are messy pets that poop and pee on the floor all the time. cause that would be the smell that would be hard to get out.

Answer:
Definately, if I never cleaned up their poop or pee even I can smell it, lol! But everytime they dirty their bed, I wash it immediately, I clean up their soiled newspaper right after they pee on it if I can (unless it's at 3am and I'm sleeping and oblivious, lol). So I think they are pretty clean and smell-less except for their doggy smell when I cuddle them and sniff them which I kinda like, lol!
I don't believe in spraying them with perfumes all the time to cover up their natural smell. But I do believe in regular baths for them
Josh smokes in the apartment and he believes that smells more than the dogs ever would, but my landlord hasn't told him to quit smoking

Answer:
yup Diana.. the smoke I would think would smell more than the animals. and no you cant keep spraying the poor animals with perfume and stuff.. geesh. didnt you say that he had a dog too??? (or did have a dog??) so what difference is that??

Answer:
Hi Clearjade:
Thankfully, since you're in Ontario, as long as you have a regular landlord/tenant lease (not a condominium or renting a room) he can't force you to get rid of your pets, unless he can prove to the courts that your pets are "lessening" the pleasure of other tenants. If there are other tenants in your building, you should get them to write a note that the dogs do not bother them at all, just to cover yourself.
As long as you're a conscientious (?sp) and clean petowner, your landlord has nothing to complain about. Some people just don't like dogs....
My two cents!

Answer:
Pam, his daughter has a dog that comes over once in a while (he's divorced, his kids live with his wife) but he told Josh that since he's showing the apartment he hasn't had her dog over either 'cos of the 'dog smell' I guess it's also the sensitivity to pet smells, you never know who can smell something you can't But he did say in the apartment ad (I placed the ad for him in the university paper ) that pets are allowed in the apartment.
greencolander, the apartment I am moving to allows pets Since I only have 2 weeks left here, I don't want to start fighting with him, it's going to take more time and effort than it's worth. So the girls will stay with my friend until I move.

Answer:
Diana Im glad that you can figure something out for the time being. Im sure your getting excited to move so that you can get them back with you. lol @ him saying pets are allowed but telling you to get rid of them. it might make some people a little more comfortable to see the pets in the house when it gets shown so they know that its not that big of a deal. but I do agree with you better to keep it calm for the time being while you wait to move.

Answer:
Pam, TODAY his kid's dog was over, lol! The day after he claimed he doesn't let the dog over anymore
Actually, I always liked the smell of stables, even though it is a combination of hay, feed and manure, lol!
I never liked the smell of the litter box when I had a couple of kittens though, that was quite yucky.

Answer:
well that goes to show how some people can be to get what they want. he may still be mad at you for refusing to take his daughters dog.
well the smell of the barn is kind of cool because its mostly the smell of the hay. and its also got the horse smell to it.
the litter box.. ewwwwwwwwwwww that is definately a bad smell!!!!
