Gourmet pet food?

Question:
I was thinking about this as I walked down the aisles piled high with pet food, great brands like Wellness, Solid Gold, Nutro, Fromm, Royal Canin etc.
As I was checking the formula for each food, I noticed that there were a lot more combinations than just chicken and rice, or beef and barley. They had chicken a la veg, duck and sweet potato, fish and potato and other fancy names. And I was wondering, what is wrong with good ole beef and barley? I remember when beef and barley was considered fancy, it used to be just chicken, or beef. Lamb is a recent addition I think.
Anyway, I was very temped to get the girls the duck and sweet potato 'cos it sounded so much better than lamb and rice that they are on right now.
Somehow, it seems like the fancy names i.e. chicken a la veg (could have come from a restaurant menu) are more for the owner's benefit, so that they can feel good about feeding their pets 'gourmet' food when it's really just kibble in the end.
Maybe I'll go out and actually get a duck for the girls instead of feeding them kibble that says it has duck in it, lol!

Answer:
I know that some dogs develop allergies to chicken, beef, corn, wheat, so that's why they need food that's formulated with other sources of protein and carbs. My manager at work has to feed her dog a kangaroo/oat based dog kibble, because of its allergies.

Answer:
Yup, Lavander developed allergies to chicken in kibble and had to switch to lamb and rice and now she is on Solid Gold Holistique Blendz. But I heard that dogs that were allergic to chicken in kibble, for example, were not actually allergic to fresh chicken in a raw diet. I think it has something to do with the processing of the meat. Kangaroo meat, now that is quite exotic. Lavander tried canned possum meat from Australia but she was not too enthusiastic about it.
But seriously, calling chicken and vegetable kibble 'chicken a la veg'?? It's a good marketing ploy, I must admit.

Answer:
My cats were eating duck and pheasant at different times. They seemed to like it but they prefer chicken or beef. Wysong sells venison (deer) around here...I've never bought it though.
Chicken a la veg sure sounds tasty.

Answer:
My dog's food has lamb and venison in it. I beleive Petguard has a few varietys of canned food with unique protein sources such as rabbit, ostrich and emu. From what I understand foods like the duck & potato or the fish & sweet potato were created for dogs that have sensitivities to the more common ingredients which was originally why lamb based foods came out but now that it has become a common ingredient in pet foods....its become a more common allergen too.
Ohhh...Chicken a la veg...LOL. I agree,definately a good marketing ploy

Answer:
Hehe, I feel guilty giving Keesha and Ally plain old lamb and rice when they could be having 'chicken a la veg'! Maybe if I called it 'broiled lamb a la rice pilaf' I could make myself feel better

Answer:
What I hate is when some crappy pet food company starts hyping their food in a "gourmet" style, when there is nothing high-quality about it.
I buy appetizing-sounding foods for Hank, but I make sure that they live up to the claims. If it says "tuna & whitefish delight", or whatever, I want to see tuna & whitefish right up there on the ingredients, not buried in by-products. I find Nutro very good for this, gourmet flavours that actually are what they claim to be.

Answer:
Well, we broke down and bought the duck and sweet potato food made by Fromm Josh was worried that the girls are not eating as much food as they should and the sales guy said that the duck and sweet potato was the most palatable and that if the girls didn't like it we can return it

Answer:
Hehehe!! Sucker! I hope they like it!
