Bark Bars offend postal workers

Question:
Beastly biscuit
Pet store chain pulls treats that posties find offensive
By CHRIS KITCHING, STAFF REPORTER
A national chain of pet stores has stopped selling dog biscuits shaped like mail carriers because they were offensive to Canada Post employees across the country. Pet Valu Canada president Ed Casey said yesterday his company has decided to remove Bark Bars from its stores after receiving a letter from the Crown corporation's legal department.
"I imagine the sales would go up now that they're being talked about in the newspaper," he said.
Casey said the letter asked the Ontario-based company to voluntarily pull the treats from its shelves and didn't threaten legal action.
Bark Bars, made in the U.S. and sold in a variety of flavours, including peanut butter, meat and potatoes, and garlic, are shaped to look like cats and letter carriers.
Pet Valu hasn't received any other complaints about the popular product, Casey said.
The company has a long-standing policy that prevents it from selling items that may offend letter carriers but "the biscuits sort of fell below the radar," he said.
Spokesman Brian Garagan said the product offended Canada Post employees because it makes light of dogs' tendency to chase and sometimes attack mail carriers.
"It was probably done in good humour but from the point of view of a letter carrier it's not very funny because it's serious business when you get bit," Garagan said, noting a recent dog attack in Chatham, Ont., where a carrier had part of her ear ripped off and two wrists broken.
"It's a nice gesture on their part ... to respect the wishes of Canada Post letter carriers," he said.
Pet Valu will continue to sell the cat-shaped Bark Bars at all 290 of its stores in Canada, including 15 in Winnipeg, Casey said.
