Composting Bedding

Question:
I have been wondering lately if this is ok: I compost the soiled newspaper & shavings from my gps' container & Cub's cage. I know that compost is NOT supposed to contain cat litter, human or dog feces, so is it ok to compost the droppings & bedding of these little guys?

Answer:
I have always sprinkled my shavings right onto my garden and have never had a problem. Actually my veggie garden was fantastic this year so I don't see a problem with it. Your gp's and cub are not meat eaters so there waste is mostly organic stuff anyways.

Answer:
I dig my guinea pig and rabbit waste right into my flower garden and I have noticed a huge improvement with my flowers.

Answer:
I compost my used litter as well.

Answer:
Funny that this topic should come up, hubby and I were just discussing this today. There is a local compost facility open to the community, where they use the compost in the flower garden at the community park. Sooooo, we were thinking of calling them and asking if we can compost the shavings and hay left from the chins and gp's, since they are vegetarian, we didn't think there would be a problem with this.

Answer:
I just thought there might be a bacterial/viral issue, although now that I think of it, farmers use cow & chicken poop as fertilizer, so why not chin/gp feces??

Answer:
i dump all my small animals bedding in the compost bucket without any complaints from the pick up guys, no bright orange stickers of rejection so far

Answer:
This may be a more appropriate question for the cat forum, but since we here in Nova Scotia are not allowed to put cat litter in our compost and when having several cats and you end up having fifty pounds of litter at the end of 2 weeks what should / could I be doing with it. Where I live we are also only allowed to have 3 bags of garbage every 2 weeks.

Answer:
Hmm, I don't know what you can do with that. I know that some more "natural" litters can be flushed.
