THS permanently reducing adoption fees
Question: If you are looking to adopt, now is a good time! I'd adopt if I could But Mr. Betta and his non-fish friends are going to have to be my only pet for a while. ADOPTION FEES REDUCED! Desperate Times at The Toronto Humane Society TORONTO (January 5, 2004) – Following one of the worst years ever, The Toronto Humane Society (THS) is permanently lowering its adoption fees. Limited space and resources at the shelter have made it increasingly difficult to care for the animals. The situation is desperate. Daily, lost, injured and abandoned animals arrive at the shelter in numbers that far exceed the numbers being adopted out. It is hoped the permanent reduction in the adoption fees will help to increase adoptions throughout the year. “In my 10 years with The Toronto Humane Society, I’ve never seen it this bad,” said Amy White, Director of Communications. “Reducing the adoption fees is a very difficult choice for us. As a charity we rely on that money to sustain the shelter. But we have no other choice as the shelter is full of hundreds of animals waiting to be adopted.” The new adoption fees are $25 for cats reduced from $95 and $50 for dogs reduced from $125. In 2003, 12,855 animals were admitted to the shelter. The THS does not euthanise animals for space. Animals are only ever euthanised for terminal illness or severe aggression. “The usual adoption process still applies; potential adopters will still have to fill out an application and go through the interview process,” says White. “Our goal is to ensure every adoptable cat and dog finds a loving new home. The adoption counselors will be very careful when screening potential adopters to ensure these pets are placed in permanent, safe and loving new homes.” The Toronto Humane Society’s Adoption Department is open: Monday and Friday - 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday -12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday – 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Answer: Bump. Answer: sounds like some pretty good deals.. I sure hope that people take advantage of them!! Answer: I know I'd be adopting if my situation allowed me to There are so many dogs and cats that need homes! I don't think they reduced their fees for small animal adoptions though. Answer: I'm relieved that they lowered the prices, i've been waiting for them to do that for a very long time. I think one of the most intimidating things about adopting from the humane society was that it was nearly unaffordable, when people are just *giving* away cats, kittens, puppies, and dogs. I kept saying that if they would lower the fees they would adopt more often, and still be able to bring home the bacon. I know they rely on the fees to pay for the pet care, but it's sad that they didn't notice until now that lowering the prices would get them a little more support from the entire pet loving community. I know were I to want an animal, I wouldn't possibly be able to afford it at old humane society prices, and would probably end up getting it from someone else. I am sure there are countless people and families in just that situation. It's a good thing they lowered the prices. Just my opinion Answer: Are the cats/dogs from the THS altered and given vaccinations? If they are, I would be more than willing to pay the old fees since I would be paying much more at my vet by adopting a "free" cat/dog. Answer: They are vetted (shots & spay/neuter), microchipped and come with one month's worth of Advantage flea drops already applied I believe. And they also come with two month's worth of Sheltercare insurance and if they get sick within 48 hours you can bring them back and they are treated at the shelter's vet for free. Answer: I'd be more than willing to pay the old adoption fee in that case. Answer: I worry that by making it more inexpensive, that people may be more likely to "impulse" buy a pet. I'm sure that their adoption staff are continuing to screen pontential adopters thoroughly. Answer: i guess we need to work more then ever to discourage people from impulse breeding as well!!! you would not believe the number of people that still believe their dog/cat whatever needs to have a litter first to make a better pet Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
