WHat is a pet?

Question:
~What is a pet?~
Some people think animals are just as equal as a book on a shelf. Some people even make it seem like they are a book on a shelf that hasn’t been read, taken down, or touched for years. This is what I like to compare it to. Some people and families are actually like this; it’s called...neglect.
My animals to me are part of the family, and like my children. Animals are the ones who comfort people and listen to you when humans don't. They are the ones with opening ears and hearts. They are just like humans...maybe they cannot talk in our language, but they can talk. You just need to listen. If you listen you will hear. You will hear their voices, and you will learn to understand them. I have been an animal owner my whole life. Owning all the way from Cats and Dogs, Chinchillas and Sugar Gliders, to Bearded Dragons and Snakes. I have loved all my animals equally no matter how different they are. I do not like it either one bit when it is all about cats and dogs. They may be one of the most popular pets, but does that mean we shouldn’t care about the others? The answer is we should care for the others. They all are important. What also makes me mad is when people buy an animal or get one and then they never take time to care for it or give it anything it deserves. And it’s a whole other story when people get many animals, and all the animals are put in this situation. I think all these animals should have and deserve respect.
Have you realized yet how much like humans animals are? I know I have. I hope everyone spreads this or creates their own essay around this topic. Maybe after more and more people read this they will start realizing and change their ways!

Answer:
I definitley agree with you! Our pets are like babies; they all need love, respect & help from us. We are the only ones who can help our fellow creatures & what do we do? We tear down their land, we're hunting & killing some, etc. We can't control their population, that is why there is alway a predator/prey thing going on every day! They need our help & our respect b/c if we don't respect & learn about them, then how can we ever try to save them!
I love animals so much!! I want to study them someday & we need to save them also b/c we want our children's children to see them. Tigers, bears, even my favorite the wolf & sharks, etc!!! C'mon we are the only ones who can make a difference, lets start doing it!!

Answer:
My pets are my best friends. They all have amazing personalities, & we spend a lot of time communicating across our species-borders. I have a chin, 2 GPs, a cat & a hedgie, & they are all that keeps me sane sometimes. Unlike human "friends" they do not betray you, act like idiots, etc.
It upsets me that some people say "oh they're only pets" & make them eat low quality food, food so low in quality that you would go to jail if you fed it to your children.
It is equaly upsetting the number of people who let animals roam outdoors to be totured, hit by cars, impregnated, injured in fights, poisoned & lost.
Let's treat our pets w/ the respect they deserve.

Answer:
Pets are so much more than just "pets."
I was on the phone with my mom yesterday and she was talking about the state lottery ($44 million) and I said that I would buy a house right away and give Oliver a big picture window so he could watch birds and squirrels all day.
She scoffed and said, "Don't go crazy or anything."
Grr! A stimulated kitten is a happy kitten. A happy kitten makes for a happy home life for everyone.
Duh!
*I always think of the cartoon 101 Dalmatians, Pongo refers to Roger as his pet!*

Answer:
Lanka, that is so true! Pets are more than having an "animal" to me. They offer companionship, affection, they are stress reducers. I think they are our best psychologists.
I feel good knowing my animals have a high quality diet, clean cages, have their own room, and an abundance of toys to stimulate them. It would be very easy for me to cage my chinnies in a small cage and provide them with very little because they are "small pets" and don't need much care or attention.
I get so livid when I hear about people who are hesitant in spending money for necessary medical attention. It is like saying, "I love you as long as you are healthy but once you get sick, I don't have the time nor the resources to properly take care of you". To me, animals and kids should not be treated any differently! Why should an animal get inadequate care because they are an animal?
Pets are always here for us, through the good and the bad. Why can't pet owners do the same for them?

Answer:
I feel much the same way as everyone else that animals and pets are no different than humans. They have there own wisdom and kindness and in my opinion are far greater than us humans with our complicated, greater than thou lives. Everything is so cut and dry with animals. They accept you for who you are and do not expect anything out of you except for a safe, caring home and quality food. Often times people do not realize how much the quality of life increases due to pets and the companionship they offer. It is this sensitivity I have towards animals that conflicts so much with most of my family, except my mom most of the time. My sister and her husband bought a Cocker Spaniel and they already have a St. Bernard. Now they did not have proper time to spend with the dog because of there jobs and lifestyle so basically should not have gotten her. When they were moving the dog stayed with us for a month or so and she calmed right down and would love to just sit in your lap and they couldn't believe it was the same dog. Well they took her back and soon she was back the way she was before. They decided since she was so wild and would sometimes nip at them (which she never did to us) that she was unsafe to have around when they had there baby so they took her to be euthanized. They argued with me forever on this and all i could say was that they were horrible owners and should have thought ahead and knowing they didn't have the time for a puppy should not have gotten her. It was completely unfair to her just because they were stupid and did not think ahead
So basically through all that, my point is is that animals are much more human in my opinion that we are ourselves. We should strive to be as accepting and understanding as they are. Just like the loyal dog that although he gets beat still stays by his master side!
