My sister got two chinnies! (and a question)
Question: My sister got to chinnies from a breeder last night. She has wanted them for a long time. They are father and son, and one is ebony and the other is really light. My sister forgot what the color is called. Hopefully I will have some pics to show you guys soon. I want to go and see them, and when I do I will take tons of pics. I have a question though. My sister was told by the breeder that she should use pine shavings. I told my sister that I have always heard that pine shavings are bad and she should use aspen instead. I seem to remember all you guys using aspen, right? I'm a rat/bunny person though so I wanted to ask the chinnie people here to make sure! Why would the breeder tell her to use pine shavings? This lady also breeds ferrets and sugar gliders and is supposedly reputable. Answer: Kiln dried pine is fine, but the bag MUST say kiln dried on it. Fresh pine is the culprate. I use Aspen myself, but it does cost a bit more. Answer: Klin dried, hmmm? I don't think my sister knows that. I will text message her right away. It seems like it would be easier for her to just get Aspen. Answer: Aspen is just as good as kiln dried pine. It's mostly just a personal preference. Congrats to your sister...maybe she should join us? Answer: Originally Posted by Candycane Aspen is just as good as kiln dried pine. It's mostly just a personal preference. Congrats to your sister...maybe she should join us? Oh, the reason I said it would be easier for her to use aspen is because I haven't seen kiln dried pine around here. Yeah I will tell her about the forum! Answer: Kiln-Dried Pine is what I use ... I buy it by the bale (Big Bag) at the local feed store for $4.50 .... However Kaytee does make kiln-dried pine, which can be found at a petsmart or most other pet stores .... if you read the front or even the back it should specify Kiln-Dried on the packaging. I will tell her. Answer: I get 10 cubic foot bales at our feed mill for $4.50-$5/bale. It's Kiln Dried Pine/Aspen mix. Tell your sister congratulations! and can't wait to see pics!!
