UTI's in chins?
Question: I have a friend that had two pink white kits this summer. Both were boys and I got to see them when they were about a month old. They were both gaining weight and very active but one of them had a "dirty butt" (meaning that it was a bit brown and matted). I just figured it was from being in the bedding and the mom wasn't cleaning him as well. But it turned out my friend took him to a vet a few weeks later when it was getting worse and they said he had a little urinary tract infection (they found a small percentage of bacteria in his urine). He was put on an antibiotic and seemed to be doing better but the dirty butt never completely disappeared. Then the boys went to another one of my friends and she took the boys to her vet (since they were different vets) and they put him back on the antibiotic (sorry, no one ever told me the names of the antibiotics) he had been on previously. I just got another email from my friend who owns this precious boy and says he still has a dirty butt so they put him on a different antibiotic. So my question is, has anyone ever had experience with UTI's in chins? And if so, what antibiotics or remedies worked best? It just seems like this little guy is peeing on himself causing his dirty butt (extremely obvious on a pink white). He is gaining weight and is very active and is doing great, like any other 3 month old kit. Any suggestions???? Answer: Do you know if they did any tests to find out forsure that he has a bladder infection? You must be careful with what medication/antibiotic is given to chins. Some of the normal penicillin and their derivates can kill or make them extremely sick. Im not trying to scare you but it's something you should be aware of. Chins digestive systems are like guinea pigs and hoarse’s. They are very sensitive. Sounds the the poor boy is having a lot of troubles. If he has been on antibiotics before and was given properly the bladder infection would most likely be gone. If the bladder infection is still there I would ask your vet for Baytril or Chloramphenicol Baytril is extremely strong for chins. Do you give acidophilus? Antibiotic can wipe out the good bacteria and that’s why acidophilus should be given. Their stomachs are very sensitive. If the Baytrol or Chloramphenicol doesn’t work you may want to look into getting more tests. Sometimes what happens is that the antibiotic doesn’t work for that specific illness so another one may be needed. Answer: I know that the owner is giving acidophilus b/c I recommended it Like I said, I don't know alot of details since its not my chin but I am trying to help out and also just learn more about it so if it ever does happen to one of my chins, I will informed. I will check with her about what antibiotics are being used. I personally don't like the idea of a chin being on antibiotics so long and still having a problem. thanks Courtney for your input Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
