HELP!!!!!
Question: Hi! It's been a while since we have been on the site but things have been quite hectic around here. I NEED HELP WITH MY FEMALE CHINCHILLA LILO. SHE HAS HURT HER LEG. SHE TRIED CLIMBING OUT OF THE CAGE AND CAUGHT HER LEFT ON THE CAGE. NOW LILO IS LIMPING AND ACTING REALLY FUNNY. LILO HAS NO BALANCE WHAT SO EVER. SHE JUST LAYS THERE. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO MAKE HER COMFORTABLE UNTIL WE CAN CONTACT A VET? THANKS Answer: I really don't know...I did find this on the internet (I don't know if Lilo has a broken leg or not, but this might help...): Broken Bones Cause The majority of broken bones occur in the legs, most often in the hind legs. A broken bone may be the result of a fall on a hard surface, being stuck by a falling object when an animal escapes from its pen or a limb may be caught in a narrow opening and twisted. Wire bottom pens, one inch by one-half inch mesh, often allow the hock of chinchilla to go through and be caught, and a broken leg results in the struggle to get free. Improper or rough handling, such as catching or holding by the legs, can result in broken bones. Treatment Place the animal in an isolation pen in quiet surroundings and seek professional help. The animal should be collared to prevent chewing the broken bone. The collar should be fashioned from stiff cardboard made in two halves taped together. The difference between the inner and outer radius should be about one and one-half inches. Prevention Examining the door catches routinely to avoid escapes. It is suggested that 1" x ½" mesh be avoided for the booms of pens. Learn how to retrain chinchillas properly. Answer: Thank you very much for the reply. Lilo really has us worried. Will have to keep a really close eye on her. Answer: Have you tried emergency vet services? If it is a broken bone, almost any vet can tell you if that is the case, whether they specialize in "exotics" like chinchillas or not. I'd get her to a vet ASAP. Answer: If she is acting funny I would guess she may be a bit shocky...The only advise I have is to try and get her to an emergancy vet ASAP Answer: thank you I have tried calling the vet, there is nothing open. Lilo is very quiet and not moving much. she also arches her back and raises her head up and then almost falls over . Her ears are laid back on her head most of the time since this happened . Answer: thank you pam we believe you are the one we buy our chin food from you for lilo and stitch Answer: Yes, I am. Nice to talk to you Jackie. Poor Lilo..she does sound like she is acting strange. So there is no 24 hr emergency vet clinic in your town? Are you far from another larger town that may have one? If she is in shock she should be kept warm and quiet. Why do things always have to happen at night or on the weekends.... I wish I could be more helpful Answer: Thanks Pam. No there is no Vet in our area open. The closet one is about an hour away from us. Its 930pm here and I have a little girl in bed. We are trying to keep her quiet and warm. We have her covered up and she is sitting on my lap. Answer: Other than trying your best to get her to the emergency vet...I am sorry if I am sounding like a broken record...I don't know what else to say....
