My very first chinchilla broke his leg!
Question: What a night. At 12am this morning my standard grey male took a jump from my arms and caught his leg the edge of a large pee pan that holds 3 cages. When he hit the floor first I thought he struck his head.I was almost a fraid to look. Picking him up his foot went backwards, and his hip was hard to feel, he ws pulling in back so hard. I did get a splint on it but was sure the hip joint and foot joint were broke. I hardly slept, and had to wait until 1pm to get the vet in. Turns out he broke his leg just above the foot. the hip was fine. Then either at the time of the break or during the night the bone broke through the skin. He in a cast and has to go back on the 27th for a recheck. They may have to replace the cast then, but he wants to check the broken skin. Just to make sure it doesn't get infected. So how long does it take a chins bones to heal? I've seen pics before of chins in casts, but this is my first broken bone. I was sick I tell ya, I couldn't believe it. Anything I should be watching for? He's in a small cage with loads of softness. He isn't eating much. I'm so worried. He's my main man. Answer: I hope he has a speedy recovery! Watch his food intake, and if he's not eating normally tonight or tomorrow morning you may want to start supplementing with syringe feedings. Answer: Oh, poor little guy! I hope he heals quickly. I would start supplementing him if he is not eating....if that gut stops, you will have more problems on your hands. Either grind up food or we use critical care and pedialyte to make sure they are well hydrated. Good luck and keep us posted! Answer: Our first chinchilla broke her leg in a very similar manner and it was quite the ordeal. She was in a cast with a cone around her head for a good six week. We gave her baytril too to prevent infection because of the broken skin. We had her in a smaller cage with really soft bedding. We gave her some calcium supplement to help promote bone regrowth and watched her eating in case she stopped and we needed to start supllementing. I don't know what your vet is recommending, but usually they let the wound heal properly before examining the bone damage some more. Tinsel seemed to be healing really well during the first six weeks, but unfortunately the xrays showed that the bone had not healed back properly and in fact all her toes were detached from the rest of the bone. We were given two options: pin the bones and hope they reattach or amputate the leg. I did the research and pinning didn't seem to have a very good success rate. It was a painful operation for the chin and would mean another 6 weeks of recovery. On top of that, if the pinning didn't work, we would have to amputate and have ANOTHER 6 weeks after that. My vet and I decided it would be too much stress for Tinsel and ended up choosing to amputate. The good news is that Tinsel lived quite happily on three legs and learned to adapt extremely well. In fact, most people did not notice she only had three legs unless I pointed it out. Your chinnie's situation may not go this far but I just wanted you to know that this is what CAN happen and to prepare yourself in case your vet gives you this option. You seem to be doing well so far as long as you monitor his eating. Answer: I forgot to add that you can pm me if you have questions or anything else Answer: Poor little guy! Wishing him/you a speedy recovery. Please keep us posted. Answer: Poor boy.. What's the little patients name? I'm sending healing vibes your way.. hope he doesn't have any complications.. keep us updated Debbie. Answer: Awww poor little guy! I hope everything works out ok. Please keep us updated! What's his name? Sending good vibes your way. Answer: I'm sorry to hear about his leg, but it sounds like he's in very caring and competant hands. Give him lots of TLC and keep us posted Answer: Thanks so much Cinnamon, shadowlark, suzoo,Mollymitten,Solarsis, out back, chinduster for your good vibes and tips. He seems to be doing much better over the last 24 hours. He's started eating, and was eager for a little run last night. Mostly he just wants to sit with me, either on my shoulder or chest, so he can let the cast leg hang in comfort. I didn't realize how long there legs were.At first he just seemed to be flicking the cast all over the place, but now has settled and seems to find some comfy way to sleep. My vet wanted to check it in two weeks but will be out of town on a work shop, and reallllly wanted to do it himself. He will be back in town on the 27th. I so appreciate my vet, he goes all out for the animlas. Last night Pokie wanted out so bad I put him on the floor, and away he went. Up a step and all. Blew me away, though he did tire quickly, he seemed to be more peed off than showing any signs of pain. Solarsis, if anything comes up you'll hear from me, thanks.
