Hey! That's what the box is for! Help!

Question:
My boyfriend and I have a one and a half year old male cat who we love to spoil. I recently bought him a black "Cats Rule!" brand litter box that has a lid on the top and is very sleek looking. We are moving to a new apartment so I wanted to get him something that would look nice with our new furniture. The litter box was not cheap at all. My problem is that he refuses to use it! I set the whole thing up for him, dipped his paw into the litter in the box so that he would know what it was, and he continues to **** on the floor next to the box.

Our cat used to belong to our roommate (who we bought him from), and he used to use a litter box with a lid. At some point, our cat was switched to a box without a lid, and now he doesn't want to use this box I bought him! I was worried the box may be too small, but the description that came with the box says it should be no problem for cats up to 26 lbs. Our cat is probably 12 or 13 lbs.

We're moving at the end of the week and our kitty will no longer be in a room with linoleum floors. We don't want him crapping on our new carpets. How do I get him to use the box?

Answer:
My cats won't use a closed box, either. Most cats don't want to be trapped in a little room with the smell of their poo.
