Question:
Are these balls safe for chins? They are the ones the chin gets in and rolls all over the floor in.


Answer:
The bigger ones can be safe, however there is always the worry of a chin overheating if they are rolling around a lot and for a long time. Also, most chins I've seen absolutely hate being in those balls and prefer bouncing around on their own terms. I tried one a long time ago with my two and they spent more time trying to find a way out or peeing in it.

While not popular with most chinchilla owners, I've had some excellent success with those large plastic balls--with some chinchillas. Since we have always limited time in the ball, and our basement is quite cool even in summer, overheating is not a problem.

I appreciate all the responses. Actually it is a giant ball and it said ( chinchillas ) on the package. She seems to do pretty good in it, but I will be keeping close watch at all times.

Ivan and Izzy have a ball and Ivan particularly seems to like it. Izzy runs around in it but Ivan REALLY gets moving. We know he's tired when he rolls it into the living room and starts watching TV (not kidding! haha). Last weekend after his roll around in the ball he watched all of Billy Madison with us quietly sitting on the top of the couch between me and my boyfriend's shoulders.
So ya, depends entirely on the chin, and depending on the weather and your personal set up would dictate how long they stay inside.

This is why I refuse to use one: Read the part on exercise. Is it a chance you're willing to take? Not me.

1. The ventilation is poor and chinchillas heat up a LOT when they exercise. They need more air.
2. The lids have been known to pop off, and if you're not supervising your chin very closely, s/he is going to be hard to track down, not to mention problems with other animals in your house.
3. Chinchillas poop constantly, and their poops will be rolling around in the ball with them, getting stuck in their fur.
4. Some chinchillas dislike the surface and will pee on it rather instinctively. Chinchillas rolling around in plastic balls with pee.
5. Balls are not suited to a chinchillas bouncy stride. They can't jump or hop in a runabout ball.
I think it's far better to chinproof a room for your chinnie to run around in.

I used to have one of those balls, but I threw it out because Buddy would poo while he ran and the poo would get stuck in his fur.

Add pee to that and you get the mess I had to clean every time I put Tinsel in a ball like that.
