Using citrus oil as a cat deterrent?

Question:
Well, I hated to do it, but I had to throw away an armchair because my cats just wouldn't quit peeing on it. I tried cleaning it to no avail.
I know when the two younger ones are old enough to be fixed, the marking should subside some. They also mark my clean laundry. I'm tired of it. Almost to the point of finding them a new home.
There is no excuse for it. NONE. They have a clean litter box, plenty of food and places to hide.
I've ordered some citrus essential oil (lemon and orange) to dilute and use in the laundry and spray on the furniture. We're getting a new armchair this weekend and if it becomes the pee-hole the cats are gone.
I'll also be investing in a super-soaker for training them to stay off the dining room table. I have never had mannerless cats and won't start now.
Have any of you used citrus oil as a deterrent with any luck? If nothing else my house will smell better...

Answer:
Have they seen a vet?
Perhaps you should find a vet that does early spay/neuter and get them fixed as soon as they are old enough...how old are they now?
Could you put the new armchair in another room that the cats are not allowed into? It seems like such a shame to get rid of them over a chair. Maybe if you are so disatisfied, they may be better off in a new home? I don't really know what to say...
I used orange oil (?) on a spot that Max used to pee on and it didn't make a bit of difference...have you tried Feliway?

Answer:
I think the early neutering surgery is part of the answer.
It's not just the chair. It's the chair, the laundry, the socks, the bedding, the carpet......Pretty much wherever they see fit. I love my cats, but I won't tolerate spiteful behavior, and that's all it is. I've walked in on a cat "retaliating" in my laundry just moments after being scolded.
Water guns and training haven't seemed to work. I don't want to get rid of the cats. Maybe getting rid of the husband? Hmmm. No, that won't work either. I'm just at my wits end. I just won't have furniture I can't sit on and clean clothes that aren't really clean.
I think we're going to get an additional litter box, spray everything with diluted orange oil, and use it in the wash too. If that doesn't work, they'll just have to be in the bathroom alone with their litter box until they can behave. I've done that before and it seems to work well.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Answer:
In my experience, punishment and cats do not go well together. I believe that some vets perform early neuter as early as 8 weeks. I would definitely have the procedure done.

Answer:
I've also heard that cats don't like citrus but just last week Annie (my 5 month old silver kitty cat) drank out of my glas of orange juice.
But hey, maybe she's just weird.
When Oliver was about a month old he started acting like a real terror and I would yell at him. Then I saw this and whenever he was acting up I'd jsut pick him up and love him until he got squirmy.
Your cats may be too old or crafty for that, but I hope something good happens for them. Were they also sneaky cats?

Answer:
I would suggest as Candice does, and get them fixed now.

Answer:
How many cats do you have? How old are they? Are you sure it is just the kittens spraying or could it be your adults as well? How many litterboxes do you have?
Didn't you post awhile back about getting a new dog? If so, did you get him? That could be causing stress for the cats..
I'll wait for response before I add any more..
