Fruit & Veg for Chins
Question: I have heard so much about "never give them anything but one raisin a day or they'll go *diabetic* & *DIE*!!!" but I have a hard time believing it. An exotic vet tech I buy Oxbow from in Montreal reccommended that I feed Cub some fruit & veg because she won't eat hay, & it's going great. She is 2 years old now & in excellent health, very solid & abundant poos, good appetite for pellets now that her gum infection is under control. Almost every night she gets either a piece of organic baby carrot, or some organic applesauce, apple or pear, or sometimes a piece of salad greens. I am wondering if anyone else feeds fruit & veg? I obviously don't give her anything with sulfur (like brocolli, cabbage, or cauliflower). She also likes mango & watermelon, organic of course. And everything in moderation. Answer: i have never tried that with my chinnies......i find that linus can eat anything and everything without a change in poops....peppers can't...even a raisin a day will make her poops look small and wet .she does better with just hay and pellets and the odd rosehip..sally can also eat anything and everything but is a very picky eater...........she only likes raisins and chin cocktail..............without the olive Answer: The only fruit my chinchillas get are a small piece of dried organic fruit as a treat. I don't give them any veggies, just their hay. Answer: I like the fact that Cub is getting extra water from the fruit & veg now that the weather is hot. She drinks a lot too but I still like to see her getting lots of moisture. She also loves it so much!! I give dried fruits too, mostly dried apple or raisins. Does anyone know about other stuff, like dried dates, currants, figs, cherries? How about sundried tomatoes? I am trying to make sure Cub gets lots of vitamin C. Answer: Chinmom, from CA chins recommends feeding kiwi for extra Vitamin C. Answer: Thanks Denise!! I am actually waiting until my Oxbow vet in Montreal has the Vitamin C tabs back in stock & getting some of those, but I think I will buy Cub an organic kiwi today & see how it goes!! So have you tried any of the other dried fruits I mentioned? Dried figs are really tasty, I wonder if Cub would like them? Answer: The only fruit I give my chins are: cranberries, apple, banana, and papaya. Answer: How could I forget *banana*? That's Cub's absolute favorite!! I will hold the banana in front of her & she leans forward & gobbles as much as she can, it's very amusing. And a great source of potassium too!! Answer: mMMm, I love dried figs Sounds like even though Cub doesn't like to eat hay, she can still get fibre from the fruit. Answer: That's what the vet tech said too Diana!!!
