Quinoa

Question:
We (Rincewind and I) were at the Bulk Barn today getting some ingredients for a supplement.
We found Quinoa (a type of grain) that looks perfect for a chin.
According to the description:
Quinoa (pronounced Keen-wa) is a grain that originates from the Andes Mountains of South America. It was one of the three staple foods, along with corn and potatoes of the Inca civilization. It is gluten free and easily digested, as well as being versatile, quick and easy to prepare.
Quinoa contains more protein than any other grain. It is a complete protein, with a nearly ideal amino acid balance. It is also a good source of fibre, complex carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorous, iron and vitamins B & E.
Has anyone heard anything about it? I would like to mix some into Taboos supplement but would like opinions first.

Answer:
I have never heard of it myself.. but I would definately be interested in hearing what you find out!! that would be nice if it could be used as a good suppliment for the chinnies.. especially since it came from the andes mountains.
here is a little info I read just now on it..
Quinoa has excellent reserves of protein, and unlike other grains, is not missing the amino aicd lysine, so the protein is more complete (a trait it shares with other "non-true" grains such as buckwheat and amaranth). The World Health Organization has rated the quality of protein in quinoa at least equivalent to that in milk. Quinoa offers more iron than other grains and contains high levels of potassium and riboflavin, as well as other B vitamins: B6, niacin, and thiamin. It is also a good source of magnesium, zinc, copper, and manganese, and has some folate (folic acid).
Quinoa's survival through the millennia may be attributed to the resinous, bitter coating that protects its seeds from birds and insects--and also shields them from the intense high-altitude sunlight. This coating, called saponin, is soapy and must be removed in a strong alkaline solution to make the grain palatable. Most quinoa sold in this country has already been cleansed of its saponin. But quinoa should be rinsed thoroughly before cooking to remove any powdery residue of saponin. Place the grain in a fine strainer and hold it under cold running water until the water runs clear; drain well.
here is the website I got the info from if you want to read more.. http://www.wholehealthmd.com/refshel...523,74,00.html
Im not sure if this helps with deciding if its okay for chins or not tho.. good luck!!

Answer:
I think we will give it a try and see how it goes. Thanks for finding that site though, I'll be sure to give it a good wash first.

Answer:
Wow, thanks for sharing Carrot! Looks like I will be doing some reading.

Answer:
How high is it in protein? Be careful and watch for small, black shiny poos. That means the chins are getting too much protein. Maybe pm Jags and see what Randy and Jeri think...something new like that could be really good or really bad. I would get their expert opinion.

Answer:
Kingsboro, that is a great idea. I was going to suggest the same thing if you hadn't brought it up. I too am a little leary of the protein levels in it.

Answer:
Any updates, Carrot?
