Cinchilla Identification

Question:
Hi
I'm new with chincillas. I bought mine at a pet store that doesn't provide information. I don't know what kind of chincilla it is. Can anyone help me with identification of the actual species?
Thanks
Carol

Answer:
Chinchillas aren't usually devided into species, a chinchilla is a chinchilla . However, there are lots of different colour mutations, what do yours look like?

Answer:
yes we definately need a pic or if not a pic you have to describe what it looks like so we can help you with the color of it

Answer:
Hi Carol,
Welcome to the forum! Congrats on your new chinchilla! We'd be more than happy to help you identify the color.

Answer:
Hello and welcome to POTN, Carol!
There are some different kinds like dwarf mutations and I think in the wild there is a type that has smaller ears and a longer tail or something like that, but chinchillas over here are usually mostly the same in terms of type.
There are lots of people here who can definately help you with identifying the colour of your chinchilla
Congratulations on your new addition!

Answer:
Yes, we'd love to identify the color. Just post a pic or two of you new cutie. As for actual species, the Genus Chinchilla is split into Brevicaudata and the Lanigera. Most chinchillas raised domestically are Lanigera.
