A very thorough explanation of mutation colours can be found on this website: http://www.silverfallchinchilla.com/color/gallery.htm I prefer pastel chinchillas over beiges just because I like the colour better. Pastels are also the same as chocolates but are often referred to as pastel when the colouring is lighter.
As for how much a pet quality chinchilla would cost, that depends entirely on where you are buying the chinchilla from. I am thinking around $75 to $100?

Denise and Lisa you are both right. I am getting a wilson white yahoo, for not bad price. As well pastels have ebony in them right? Where beige's don't? Also don't pastels have a different color belly?

Cheryl is right. Beiges are just that..beige with a white belly. They exist in the heterozygous state (beige and standard "mix"-darker) and the homozygous state (pure beige - light cream color).
Pastels are a mix of beige and ebony. Their bellies are also beige. There are different "levels" of this ebony and beige mix. Pastels are the lightest - usually first generation beige and eb mix. Tans are darker - usually second generation pastel and ebony mix (more ebony), and chocolates are the darkest resulting from third generation breeding of a tan with an eb, with the most ebony influence. Confused yet, lol?

Yes, there is a possibility of chocolates. With the ebony gene being tricky, you can get either tan, pastels or chocolates out of that match.
