Question:
I had to buy some loose hay for the time being, because I ran out of the haycubes and I'm not going to be able to purchase them this week. So I bought some fresh loose timothy hay to tide the boy's over and they are totally loving it. I've never seen Calvin sit and munch on hay so much, he just sits right by the pile and eats away. Romeo does the same thing too, but he acts like the hay is treats! I have actually decided now to order some loose hay from Oxbow to see how they will like that and also continue to use the cubes because they do enjoy them too! I just thought I'd share how well my chins loved loose hay, I didn't think they were going to take to it.
Do your chins go as crazy for loose hay?
This morning the ENTIRE pile of hay was gone..the "pigchillas" strike again.

My chins LOVE their loose hay. I alternate between cubes and loose hay. I buy the APD timothy 2nd cut hay. That is great your chins love their loose hay so much.

Jess, yes, I am more than pleased with APD. In the beginning, I ordered from Oxbow and it was good but once I tried APD, I noticed a big difference. My chins ate more of the APD than they did the Oxbow. Their hay smells and looks fresher. Racehorses also eat APD so I know it is good quality hay. Maybe Oxbow does too but I don't know....

My chins & guinea pig all LOVE loose Timmy hay... I bought some Oxbow Oat Hay and they are eating it but not loving it as much...

I too use both loose and cubed hay. I believe the loose hay is better for helping to keep their back teeth ground, and the cubed hay is better for keeping their front teeth ground. The loose hay is a bit messier, but my chinchillas quite like theirs. I buy from a woman in Washington state, and use both her timothy and bluegrass hays. The cubes I buy from Chinworld online.

Jessica, yep, that IS who I bought my last batch of hay from, and have been very pleased with the stuff. It smells great and my chinchillas love it. If you were just a bit closer I'd send a sample your way!

I get my hay locally but I wanted to say how much my chins love grass hay. The boys would never eat much hay but since the switch they eat it before their pellets all the time!

I recently bought grass hay for the girls and have to agree with Candice. Chins absolutely go bonkers for it! Tinsel and Jigsaw ate pretty decently before but since I switched to grass hay, I find their hay bowl empty every single morning.
