Chin cage: opinions
Question: Hi, im the newest member here, and im definitely thinking of buying a chin (or 2). But i want to buy all the accessories first. Im thinking of this cage, http://www.petcarecentral.com/suppetpetinm.html id like your opinions and suggestions. Like, is it too big, too much plastic that they will chew on, etc. Thanks ChinRegina Answer: Well it's definately not too big! Chins love the room to jump. But like you said, I don't really like the plastic. Chewing on plastic is not the best for chins. For my chinchilla cages, I used pine shelves for the levels. It is not permanent, because with their chewing on it they will eventually be replaced, but I think it's safer for them. I never had a plastic cage, so I'm not sure how much a chin would chew on it, but my chins have done some serious remodeling of their levels of wood and I wouldn't doubt they could do the same thing with plastic. Answer: My temporary chin cage has alot of plastic and neither of my chins have chewed on the shelves at all... using the website above, my cage is SP-60317 SuperPet 4-level deluxe cage... I only use 2 shelves & I removed the ramps (they didn't need them)... I suppose if you find that your chinchillas start chewing on them, you could replace them with wood... Answer: That cage has lots of space for chinchillas. I have a few chinchillas who would demolish the plastic (I speak from experience ) and I have a few who would leave it alone. I would recommend replacing all - or at least most - of the shelves with pine, which is not too difficult. You might also want to consider the Midwest Ferret Playpen at www.superpet.ca which has a lot of space as well but needs a lot of extra shelves added (Superpet.ca has free shipping and they deliver within 3 business days) It's hard to find good cages at good prices in Canada. Best of luck Answer: The cage is great except for a couple things. Like some members already said, be prepared to replace the shelves with pine if your chin(s) start to chew. Secondly, the cage needs at least one full floor to prevent long falls (ie. from the top of the cage to the bottom). Chins get really active and falling is not all that uncommon. I like that the cage has wheels and it is definitely big enough. The only other gripe I have is the price. IMHO, you can build a much better cage if you are handy with a drill (you can get the wood cut for you at Home Depot, etc.) and a staple gun. Welcome to the forum!! It sounds like you are on the right track to having some chins of your own! Answer: I have this one.. and mine do fine in it. there are a few chew marks but nothing major.. they dont prefer to chew on the plastic.. and if you give them plenty of toys they will chew on those and more than likely leave the shelves alone. they love the tubes.. they go in there and sleep alot. although I do have to say cleaning the tubes is the biggest pain in the rear... you could always do like the others have said too ... just replace the shelves with pine if you find them chewing on them. good luck!! Answer: I have to agree with everyone about the plastic....I wouldn't even take the chance that the chins might chew on the plastic...all of our chincs cages are from martins cages, www.martinscages.com and we have always been happy with them. There is absolutely no plastic that they can chew on, they are large and the pull out pans are so easy to clean. Welcome and good luck! Answer: Hmm, the link didn't work for me. Answer: i agree with the plastic....i had a plastic cage.....HAD is the word in this sentence.....my little chin demolished the plastic.....also...if you have a large cage a pull out tray is nicer...............having to lift a large cage for a cleaning can be a pain.............i have ferret cage from hagen and the id n umber is......H-955..........www.hagen.com..I fixed it up to my liking with wood shelves and 1/2 by 1/2 inch mesh in bottom.....here are my 2 cages Answer: Thanks for the helpful hints, I'll definitely think of a solution for the plastic thank you for all your suggestions I'm really really excited about getting a chin Thanks again -ChinRegina Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
