What does chewing look like?
Question: I was at the petstore the other day and there were three chins in the enclosure. Naturally, I went to check them out and watched them for awhile. They seemed to be healthy but I noticed something on the little standards rear. You know when they slip fur but it doesn't come all the way out and just sort of sticks out...that's what it looked like. There were probably 5-6 pieces sticking out. Is this chewing? I have never had a chewing chin so I don't really know what it looks like. There wasn't any bald spot or a section that looked chewed down...just little tufts hanging out. Maybe they were fighting? Answer: Candice,,,,,when i put Tigs and Deja together they had a few tuffles, nothing major,,and what you described sounds exactly what Tigs looked like,, I thought a fur chewers fur was all choppy looking Answer: That's what I thought too. It looked really strange though. Answer: I think that sounds more like some fur slippage than chewing. If the fur was chewed, I think it would be more like a patch of uneven fur. You'd also have some of the undercoat showing. At least that what I understood form the reading I've done. Answer: Candice, I also agree. What you saw does not sound like fur chewing. I have seen a fur chewed animal up close and the coat looks very, oh how can I say? jagged? Sounds like small tufts of fur taken out. Answer: That's what I thought too but since I had only ever seen pics of chewing, I wasn't sure. It was just really strange that the tufts were all in a small area and there weren't any others. Answer: When I got Tinsel, She had a tuft of fur sticking out from her butt. It was there for quite a while until I decided to snip it. This could be similar to what Tinsel had. Answer: Sometimes if they slip a large amount of fur, a bit of a "bald" spot will show, or "shorter" fur. This has happened to Calvin before when I was introducing Romeo to him (they got in a little tiff and he must have panicked). Answer: The tufts could be matted fur too. Sounds like there could have been some fighting going on or dirt in the cages that matted his fur. The only way to get rid of that is to pluck them out. Chewing looks like dark mowed spots on standards. Answer: Heres a picture of Kaysa from when she was furchewing..the fur looks very cropped and almost coarse. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
