question about how much hay and crannberries...

Question:
im gettin my chin tomarrow yippy! anyways i was just going to put the food and hay in tonight. i read some where that one chin should have 1 tablespoon of mazuri in the morning and 1 at night. it seems like its such a little amount though...do i have this correct? also on hay i put a small hand full of timothy and a smaller amount of alfalfa since his food is baced on alfalfa hay. i also sprinkled a "tiny" amount of chinworld oats on his pellets and put a slice of a dried cranberry in on top also. i was readin the ingredients to the dried crannberries and it said "cranberry and sugar" i read chins arent supposted to have much sugar, but is it alright to give a slice of a dried cranberry to my chin?

Answer:
That is correct Emy. Some chins will eat more, some will eat less, but 2 tablespoons is about average. Make sure that you give him the same pellets that the breeder was feeding and then slowly switch over after he has adjusted to the surroundings (that is, if he is going change foods). Your hay ration sounds good.
The only thing I am concerned about is the oats and the cranberry. Is he already eating supplement? If not, I would hold off a bit to give him some. Chins can become very stressed when changing environments and it can cause digestive problems. I would wait to see how he adjusts and then slowly introduce the oat blend.
About the cranberries, I wouldn't use ones with extra sugar. Your local health food store should have some organic dried cranberries without sugar. I know that Craisins (made by Ocean Spray) have sunfloer oil in them...that is why I prefer the health food store ones. If he is still young and not used to getting treats, I would hold off on the cranberry too. Like I said, it can be a big adjustment for some chins (some hardly notice the change in scenery) so I think it would be best to wait and see how he feels.
I can't believe that he is finally coming home!! It seemed like such a long time to wait and now it's here...you must be so excited!

i am, he is almost 10months old, and has been eating mazuri at his breeders home. ok whew im glad that the hay amount is ok, and the pellets. also ill hold off on the crannberries and buy some that im for sure dont have extra sugar. as for the oats ill hold off on them too till he is settled in. thanks

Answer:
oh i for got to add, i dont know if he has had supplement before. ill email the lady and ask.

Answer:
I would also not put the cranberry (treat for the day) in the food bowl. It will help with the bonding if you feed it from your fingers. I find it is more fun that way, anyway!

Answer:
ok thanks! u guys are so nice, i posted this on chins-n-quills and i got
"Emy, I think you mean well, but that isn't the way to feed your chin. First of all, no treats until he's at least six months old. Second, NEVER mix his treats or supplements on his food. Third NO sugar coated cranberries at all..."
i dont think she ment it to make me feel like i dont know anything, but it kinda did. :S
pple on potn are arent rude and chew new owners out like alot of other boards. just wanted to say this is the best forum i have been on.

Answer:
Emy, we have all been newbies to something at one time or another so it's only reasonable that we try to help as much as we can since we were once helped too.
10 months is a safe age to give treats but I would still wait to see how he does. When I adopted Santos, he barely noticed that he was in a new home. Hazel was very cautious and scared. It took her much longer to feel comfortable. It just depends on the chin.
There was a thread on treats here and just my opinion, but dried fruit should be limited. I like to give my chins individual pieces of grains from their supplement instead. It seems like they are getting more treats that way and it is also good for them. I will find the thread for you and post it here.

Answer:
Here it is. It's shorter than I remember though.

Answer:
I agree with Emy, this IS the best forum on the net. Extremley helpful and the people are very friendly. Unlike some of those other forums (we all know which ones) that I frequent where people jump down your throat for anything. Plus they don't really know what they are talking about themselves.
This is definatley the best "family friendly" forum
Good luck with your new chin Emy. Craisins and Dried papaya from the organic section of the grocery store are my chins favorite treats. Papaya is not only tasty, but it helps with any hairball problems that may occur from chewing, shedding, ect.

Answer:
You are so lucky to be getting your chin.....not like me and have to wait another month almost! Sounds like you are all prepared and are going to be a great chin mommy!
Have fun with your new little guy and keep us posted!
