Cat Walking Season Is Here!!

Question:
It's funny, Hank never asks to go for a walk when it's winter, but the first day of spring she was asking for a walk in an unmistakable way. She avoided our normal paths through a field & woods because she dislikes snow underfoot but we did walk the perimeter of the house slowly as she sniffed everything, ate some grass & had a good roll on some asphalt.
I highly recommend walking your indoor cats, they love it & it is good for their mental health. I also find it much more peaceful to walk a cat than a dog, esp. once you get a route established.

Answer:
Neuro, can you give some pointers on how to walk a cat on a leash? Most of our cats came to us as adults and weren't trained from an early age to leash walk. Now when I take them out they flip out and try to get back inside.

Answer:
I started out w/ very short walks in quiet areas. Make sure to use harness to attach leash, not collar, & only do one cat @ a time to start. You might also want to try carrying the cat around on your shoulder (wearing leash) until they take interest in getting down on their own.
Desmond Morris (CatWorld) actually claims you can't walk a cat on a leash, but that's b.s. It just takes practice.

Answer:
We walk our shelter cat Pumpkin in the warm months... or should I say, he walks & we follow... he usually just walks thru the flower beds in front of the Shelter and then lies down under a shrub for awhile... he's a lazy cat!

Answer:
Pumpkin sounds very funny!!

Answer:
My cats prefer to look around as opposed to walk...but Syd will chase the occasional butterfly.
