worried about the baby

Question:
maybe Im just being an overreacting grandma... but the baby lost a gram.. and Livvie hasnt been paying any attention to it tonight.. and its belly feels cold and not full.. should I supplement him??

Answer:
Sorry I haven't been following, but how old is the baby? A one gram loss usually isn't enough to concern me. My babies will fluctuate greatly the first 2-3 days and depending on when during the day I weigh them, even as they get older.
Is there anything that could be distracting Livvie? New noise, change in cages, large cage ...? I had to move one of my first time moms to a one level cage to get her to stay with the first baby she had. Her subsequent litters she's done well with. You may want to put a heating pad under half of the cage if that's possible at all. This way the baby can go there for warmth but move if it gets too warm.

Answer:
the baby was born yesterday... I think Im more worried cause the baby isnt moving very much... as a matter of fact its moving less than it was earlier.. I havent seen Livvie by the baby for quite some time now..
I posted about the baby in "new baby" and there are pictures.. he weighed 31 yesterday.. and now between 29-30 today..
she hasnt had any change except for me taking Charlie out of the cage.. she is in a bigger cage.. and she can get away from the baby.. she didnt do this so much with Lucy.. I am thinking of putting her in a smaller cage so she cant get away so easily..

Answer:
I'd put her in a smaller cage and use the heating pad if you're able, too. If you have any Karo syrup, you can smear a little on baby's lips - this can help bring it's blood glucose up, give it a boost.

Answer:
thanks Jade... what about if I do have to suppliment it... I had a sirynge at one time.. but now I cant find it... and since its 10:00 pm on a sunday night there is nowhere I can go to get one.. would a spoon work if I just put a little in that and held it to the babys lips just to get a little on there?

Answer:
Pam, I would try a baby spoon. Poor little guy. Sorry to hear Livvie is not paying attention to him. I don't want you to think I am sounding cold but she may sense something is not quite right with the baby. If Livvie isn't feeding him by tomorrow you should supplement. Hope all goes well.

Answer:
we tried the baby spoon.. tried to use a really skinny straw.. the baby just isnt taking any of it at all... Im thinking its not going to make it thru the night.. it has went downhill fast.. it is now flopped over on its side..
we tried the smaller cage but Livvie just keeps running from corner to corner.. trying to get out.. not paying any attention to the baby.. and in the meantime tromping over it.. so I put them back in the cage.. I figured at least she wont smoosh it.. and maybe will try to feed it..
yes Denise.. I was thinking also that maybe Livvie knows something isnt right with the baby.. Livvie didnt gain any weight in the last few weeks of pregnancy..
its so sad... and we tried.. but I dont thing it will survive..

Answer:
poor Frobaby didnt make it... Im holding him.. we tried all that we could to get him to take some milk.. but he just couldnt.. I just wanted to make him as comfortable as I could.. while I could. he laid on my chest covered up and tried to breath.. he took his last breath about 12:50ish AM.. Im so sad.. but glad that he is no longer suffering.. Im just so sorry that there wasnt more that we could have done for him.. we will put Frobaby to rest tomorrow..

Answer:
Really sorry to hear that, I know you did the best you can!!
