Poor Freddy has a sore foot..:(
Question: I noticed when I got Freddy that he had some calluses on both back feet. I didn't think too much of it as I thought it might be a normal occurance in some chins and a couple of chin people told me it wasn't too unusual. I have been keeping an eye on them and in the last little while the one on his right foot has gotten a bit bigger. With all the stuff that has been happening around here lately I guess I haven't been checking on it regularly enough. This morning I noticed a small amount of blood on one of the shelves and checked Freddy over really good and realized that his foot is quite swollen and there is a small scab on the bottom. I am pretty sure it is infected as I felt around and it does seem puffy around the joint. Poor little guy is just such a patient boy to let me take such a good look and poke around so much. Now of course....this would be the time that my vet is away for 2 weeks, getting married, of all things...lol. I made an appointment to see another exotic vet in Abbotsford for tomorrow morning but I am a bit leary of taking him to someone I have never seen before. My usual vet is really knowledgeable with chins and I trust him completely. Has anyone ever had this happen before? I mean, had a callous get infected? Answer: I would put some Neosporin ointment on it. Answer: I am putting neosprin on it but seeing as there is no open wound I'm thinking he might need to be on oral meds too. We'll see what the vet says tomorrow morning. Answer: what kind of cage is he in pam? does it have wire shelves or a wire floor? If so that might be what's causing it. Answer: The cage that he came in had wire shelves and a solid bottom. I changed the shelves to wood right away. So if they caused the callouses it was probably before I got him. But I'm not sure if it was the cage he was in all along or not. Strange though cause Ginger doesn't have any on her feet. I have been putting neosporin on his foot but he seems to groom it off as soon as I put it on. Answer: His feet were probably dry and then cracked. That happened to Zoya as well and it was a pain in the butt to keep it from cracking again (while it was healing). Now I use a little bit of fragrance-free cream once a week to keep her feet soft. Answer: After a visit to the vet, Freddy does indeed have an infection in his foot. Poor little guy She palpated it and said it was quite squishy indicating an infection. The callous had cracked and infection started in there. He is on Baytril for 10 days and I have to soak his foot in Betadine solution twice a day. He was such a good boy for the vet. She said he was a very healthy boy otherwise and couldn't believe how well behaved he was. Answer: Poor Freddy! I'll be sending some nice, warm, foot-healing thoughts his way. Answer: Aww Poor guy. It's probably good he is on oral meds too. My chins would NEVER behave that good. What a good little boy. How are his feet doing now? Are they getting better? Answer: There doesn't seem to be much change with his foot. It is still swollen but I guess it may take a few days for the meds to work. It's only been 2 days of meds. It is looking not so dried out as I am soaking it in Betadine solution and applying a neosporin cream on after. He's still his normal self and not bothering with his foot or limping at all so it can't feel too sore for him. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
