Question about cage bedding...

Question:
Ive decided to order the chinchilla mansion from Qualitycage.com and i was curious if bedding is required on the floor of the cage because ive seen pics of cages with no bedding....any advice??? Whats the best bedding to use?? And whats a good treat for chins besides raisins??? thanks for the help...

Answer:
A favourite amongst a lot of chinnie owners, breeders, and ranchers is kiln dried pine. Another good bedding is Cell-Sorb. Never use anything with aromatic oils in it. It isn't good for their delicate respiratory system.
As for treats, unsweetened shredded wheat, organic dried apples, craisins, papaya or banana chips are fine.

Answer:
thanks denise!!

Answer:
You can also use aspen bedding if you can't find pine or cell sorb

Answer:
I was told by someone at a different board (I believe chinchillas unlimited) that often it's better to not use bedding, but paper instead. I have been using paper ever since. I don't remember exactly why they said it wasn't any good, but I'll go back and look for the topic again to link here.

Answer:
Paper does not absorb urine like bedding does. I also don't like the fact that newspaper has ink on it which can be harmful to a chinchilla if the paper is ingested. The only people that may use paper are the ones that don't have solid bottom trays in their cages. All the ranchers use kiln dried bedding for their chinchillas and never have any problems.
