Basic Commands

Question:
For those of you who walk your cat on alead, or want to, I highly suggest teaching your cat the following commands:
"time to go outside" + presentation of leash= getting ready to go
"no" followed by short jerk on lead= to keep cat from pulling off to areas s/he shouldn't go;
"wait up" followed by you standing still for a moment= to keep cat from fighting the lead/pulling/taking off;
& "time to go home"= do this when the cat is HUNGRY & you get the best results, which will then work when cat is not hungry.
I have taught these commands over the past 2 years & Hank is now very, very good. I once dropped the leash & said "wait up" a few times calmly & she waited for me!! And "time to go home" is a very valuable command. You may have to teach it @ first by carrying the cat home as you repeat it, or saying it as the cat heads that way.

Answer:
Good tips! I occasionally walk our shelter cat 'Pumpkin' although I'm not really sure you can call it walking.. he usually doesn't get much further than the flower bed out front of the shelter...
