cat-proofing
Question: Mojo is on his way to integrating with my dogs, and I realized I need to probably cat proof the house somewhat. What are things that I need to move, be aware of, etc. I am new to the world of cats. Thanks in advance! Answer: plants-they can be poisonous if eaten, at least many types of plants are, they also seem to attract cats to use them as alternate litter boxes LOL. Blind cords or anything stringy hanging down they could strangle themselves with. I have an adult cat so I am drawing a blank for anything else at the moment. I am sure Suzoo will have a complete list. Answer: I like to put childlocks on all lower cabnets.Keeps them out of them and away from the garbage & cleaning supplies. And out of my pots & pans Answer: Two things I remember we had to do when Isobel and Bruce were babes were: (1) make sure there are no small objects lying around that could cause choking. It's amazing what kittens will try to eat. (Well, adult cats too...Not too long ago I had to pry Hamish's mouth open to see why he was pawing at his mouth -- turns out he had one of those square plastic bread bag ties wedged against the roof of his mouth held in place by his teeth!!). I was constantly having to check the floors to be sure nothing dangerous got dropped. (2) make sure there are no areas big enough for a kitten to crawl into but small enough to get stuck. We had to block off a couple of gaps in the kitchen (ie between the stove and the wall). Answer: Some kittens chew wires so try to keep wires hidden behind furniture.. They like to climb just about anything so anything unstable could tumble.. **Big one is check the refridgerator before closing the door.. I have found a few chilly kitties before I learned this lesson (thankfully they were never in there long ).. Keep the toilet seat down at all times! (I yell at my friends all the time for this one.. even when I don't happen to have any kittens at that time.. just to keep them on their toes!) make sure window screens are secure and check them often as kittens will climb the screen.. make sure they have a locking mechanism.. biggest way kittens can escape plus if you live in an apartment.. the cause of High Rise Syndrome (cats falling to their death).. cat's don't always land on their feet... Plants are a problem.. If they don't chew the leaves, they dig in the dirt! Let me find a link to the poisonous ones for you.. www.cfainc.org/articles/plants.html Answer: Oh, and when you get up in the middle of the night for a pee, shuffle your feet -- don't lift your feet cos there's more than likely a kitty or two there in the dark darting around your feet! Answer: oohh good tips from all... what is the name of that plant that sorta looks like ivy, has heart-ish shaped leaves and is varigated white or a pale yellow with green.. always sold in super markets and stuff.. i know its name is not ivy but I cannot fof the life of me figure it out..... Answer: my tip is to make sure you have as much room on the bed that you want as soon as you lay down. cause by the end of the night you wont have any room left at all!!! lol be prepared for them to jump out at you at unsuspecting times... LOL now we have to fight to claim space for ourselves between our pug and peke. I shudder to imagine a cat in there as well!! We need a larger bed! Answer: Be careful of trash cans, especially the one in the bathroom. Cats can really hurt their insides if they swallow dental floss. We put a plastic, grocery bag in the trash can and tie it up a little so Oliver can't get inside. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
