Cats and Collars and harnesses
Question: Im wondering should a cat have a collar on at all times? Like I do with my dogs? Anyone have reccomeneded brands of collars and or harnesses. I used one of my ferret ones and took Preciouse outside the other day it was a little tight on her but worked for the time being. Answer: Well, as I work in the lost and found department at the Ottawa shelter, I'm an ID freak. In a bad way. My cats are indoors only, with break-away collar and name tags, as well as microchips. I would suggest a safe break-away or elastic-type collar, with an ID tag. Yes, she may lose the collar, but I'm sure you'd rather she lose the collar than be stuck in a tree somewhere, strangling. My cats wear Safe Cat brand cat collars. They come in funky colours and patterns. Answer: I actually purchased a small dog harness and leash for Mouse. She gets to go out on the deck and go for rides in the car. My Hermie will NOT keep a collar on- but she never goes for the door like the other two, so I don't worry about her getting out and getting lost. Answer: I haven't met a collar that my cats can't get off. They hate them. If she tolerates it then go for it. Answer: Mine have worn collars their whole lives so I guess it was just natural to them.. they don't seem to mind at all... they have break-away collars.. not sure of the brand but it says 'The Safety Collar' on the snap and they have paw prints on them.. I work with GC so I'm abit of an ID freak as well.. I'd at least get an ID tag with your address & phone# on it.. you could also write INDOOR ONLY on the tag so if Preciouse got out accidently and a neighbor sees her, they'll know she's not supposed to be out & will more likely to bring her home to you.. some might think she's an indoor/outdoor cat otherwise.. Answer: I have tried and tried to keep collars on Aspen... either he takes them off or Andy does.. I even have one that I got at the humane society with his ID on it.. but like I said he has a spaz attack when I put it on him... and he also does that ... OMG this thing is on me and its soooo heavy I cant move!!! stance,... lol.. Answer: hmm me thnks ill have to go buy preciouse a special collar and id tags in a couple weeks, God this cats going to be spoiled shes all ready getting a HANDMADE cat bed from the neighbor lol. Answer: You're doing right by her, no one can argue with that. Right after we got Oliver (at under 3 weeks old) I got a reflective-pattern, safety collar with id tag just in case. If he ever showed interest in darting out the door, he would have to wear it all the time. Lo and behold, he did try and he got the collar. It was hell on him too. With the bell he thought it was a toy around his neck that he couldn't quite get to. He rolled around and around so I took it off. I removed the bell but trying to put it back on was hell for me! After a full day he got completely used to it and it's nice to know where he is (the tag makes a little noise when he moves). Answer: Yeah.. those bells don't make it easy.. I always remove them.. I know they are supposed to be a warning for outdoor critters (birds, mice etc) but when they are indoor cats its just annoying for the cat & owner.. Answer: You definitely need a collar & tags. I question the use of microchipping at this point because my vet tech sources tell me no one ever checks cats for microchips unless the cat is obviously exotic-looking like a Bengal or Siamese. I am considering getting Hank tattooed on her ear. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
