Breeding Couples
Question: I'm curious about whether any of you have tried having more than one female caged with a male at the same time. If I one day pick up another female that I'd like to have bred, could I have two females together with the male? I think I've heard of that before, but I certainly have not tried it. When birthing time comes for one female before the other, I'd removed the male, but could I leave the two females together? Hmm, questions, questions, questions. Answer: I had a few like that, and all of them, out of the blue, after a few years together, the females turned nasty to each other and had to be seperated. I have yet to have any long term success with it. Almost lost a few females this way too. What I do now, is keep them together until one is pregnant, then I seperate them, since that seems to be when their hormones go haywire. Answer: Thanks, Firefox. It certainly is not an issue for me now, but I'd like to plan ahead. Answer: I've only successfully paired one Trio. It was my Pink White and Standard Female with my Brown Velvet boy. It took FOREVER in the introduction cage. They were only together for about 6 weeks though, the girls started beating up on him, so I ended up seperating them. Both females have had one litter of one, both on seperate occassions and I haven't seperated them. They've done fine together and are still together now. I think if I were to breed them again though, I would do pairs rather than do another trio. Answer: I've had very temporary success with a trio but I would go with what Laurie has said, she's had way more experience but as Sandy was giving birth to Peeps, Candy came down and was all nosey and when Peeps was here Candy got all excited doing happy hops! They were both grooming Peeps, very cute. But the long term I don't know what would have happened since Sandy was seperated from Andy and Candy after the birth and then Sandy passed away. But what I do notice is after my mom's have given birth they go crazy. In a way kind of mean. It's hard to pair them up after and they hate anyone that's not there babies. I still to this day can't get Chilly, Silly and there babies back together. Candy is a bit of a nut now, she did live with Silly while she was pregnant but after the birth, nope! I've tried the female mom's together too, just can't get anything to work, LOL. Answer: This is called colony breeding and it can work very well. Research it thorougly though to avoid mishaps. Answer: I'm too paranoid to try it...I like the safety aspect of runs, but I hated the tiny cages...so I built my own and so far everyone is gaining weight again and are grooving on all the new found space!
